New announcement that this website is going dark on 1 December. The site had a crash a couple of years ago and came back on a new platform but the database of previous posts was never loaded (the site owner supposedly still has the db). There was a wealth of data and knowledge in those old posts - be a shame if it never again saw the light of day.
Received. Thanks mcoffee. I did sign up at the USAAF forum earlier today to contact him, but haven't received my activation email. I may need another way to contact him.
At a bit of an impasse here, frustration abounds. I tried to join his site and message him, but I've not received the validation email. mcoffee has message him for me without success. From what I've read on his site, Scott might have some real life concerns that are intruding with his admin duties. Something I'm all to aware of myself. I know I can keep the current data online and restore the old database to a live state, but the Dec 1 deadline is looming. I'm really hoping someone has the contact info for Scott Burris, and can connect me with him.
Bumping this. I've tried almost everything I can think of. There are still a few more options but it's all sending messages via third parties at this stage. The whois info for armyairforces.com is set to private, so no help there. It's a smart move in general, but doesn't help me here. If anyone has any contact info for Scott Burris, email, Facebook, Twitter, anything, please let me know. It would be a crying shame to have the data to offline.
When you send emails you can ask for a return receipt. The receiver doesn't have to accept it but you can get a delivery receipt and in some cases know if he has opened the email.
I'm painfully aware of the difficulty in sending out activation emails. All applicable folders have been checked on my side, and I use gmail, so the spam filtering is rarely heavy handed. Scott, the proprietor of the USSAF site has reportedly been pulled away from his virtual admin duties due to tangible concerns in the real world. Something I'm keenly aware of and totally understandable. Some threads on the site indicate some technical problems, so the lack of activation emails might be part of that. A few irons in the fire with hopes of reaching Scott right now. I'm hopeful.
Me too Lou. The USAAF forums are one piece. Scott Burris has done a tonne of work on the USAAF, spread over a slew of websites. With any luck we can preserve it all.
I was very sad to see this bit of news today as I was when the crash happened! Had a lot of good info on there in general and with threads of a personal interest. That being said as usual I couldn't let this go with out digging and found this news: AAF Forum Project - HeritageLeague Hope it works if not Otto maybe you can still save it!
Clint, do you know how old this news is? And further, do they have enough volunteers? While I haven't frequented this site, I hope it can be rescued. One can only hope that Otto can be involved.
Lou, As of right now I do not know how old this news or information is but the link looks good! The volunteer information as well would be a mystery to me since it looked like a "submit your info we'll talk" type of deal. The page did say they have the database/info....not sure if they contacted Scott Burris directly or how they obtained it etc...... mcoffee any thoughts????
Mike Simpson received the database of the armyairforces forum from Scott Burris and it supposedly includes the old data from before the 'crash'. The link was put up in late November before armyairforces went dark. Was hoping that Otto could make contact with Burris but I don't believe he was successful.
Scott Burris contact nobody. We hope Otto can restore an new AAF Forum next to this forum. The most active forummembers of AAF will help Otto. Jaap
An update for you Rogues. Still no word regarding AAF. I've made several direct inquiries, and filled out their page requesting support: AAF Forum Project - HeritageLeague It's completely understandable that this takes time. I performed a couple forum rescues that had multi-year turnarounds, and that was a fairly straightforward import of data. Restoring a site, even as an archive presents a significant technical problem, and takes a significant amount of time. The cost is also another layer of complexity, as it requires and modest but neverending outflow. Web hosts and domain registrars care not one bit for military history or any other subject, so the funds must be in place in advance, generally 12 months ahead of time. My offer of assistance is indefinite, and I'm ready to help in any way I can. With or without my help, hopefully the site/data can get online again. I will of course update you all here if/when news comes in.
