    The above photos are haunting. Out of uniform, in casual clothes, they probably look like "average men". However, the horrifying nature of their crimes, and possibly being emaciated, 3/4 of them above have an evil veil about them, specifically the eyes. Just to think of them trudging home at the end of the day satisfied with a days work, or perhaps lamenting over it, is a gruesome thought.

    Those photos are so strong. I can't even imagine what is going on in their heads.

    What surprises is just how common people in that situation just go ahead and participate. Getting assigned to a death camp is a real world Milgram experiment, and like the original Milgram findings a shocking majority of people fail that test.

    There is no way to excuse or justify their actions. It's just so uncomfortable and unnerving to think how readily so many assist.

    And yet, they did. There must be some flaw in the human makeup that allows this to occur. You can ascribe many reasons why this happens, but it seems to be universal. The same kind of thing can be seen in many places besides Germany; Cambodia springs to mind. Maddening and frustrating.

    sentence: 18 months in prison, 12 months credited for time served.
    mitigating circumstances: ill health, a member of The Communist Party of Germany till 1933, comes from a Polish village in Germany. It has been shown he behaved towards the Poles correctly, so it may be inferred he behaved towards the prisoners correctly too.

    crime: ct.1 - membership in a criminal organization (Schutzstaffel), ct.2 - in Fall 1941 tormented an unknown young prisoner who didn't salute him properly, ct.3 - in the second part of 1944 tormented female prisoners of Jewish origin by beating them unconscious, causing body injuries, forcing them to work beyond their strength, denying food, and employing other sophisticated abuses.
    sentence: ct. 1 - six years, ct. 2 - six years, ct. 3 - ten years in prison. 18 months credited for time served, confiscation of property, deprivation of public rights for 10 years.
    total prison term: 10 years.

    I kinda feel sorry for sons and daughters, nephews and nieces, and grandchildren who are alive today, knowing fully well what their ancestors did.

    Eyewitnesses have said that men who refused to take part in killing were yelled at but not really punished. They were given other duties.
