Good evening I am looking at the life of poet Wladyslaw Szlengel who regularly organised a cabaret event 'Life Journal' at Cafe Sztuka, in the Warsaw Ghetto. Wladyslaw Szpilman , most known via Polanski's film ' The Pianist ' and singer Wiera Gran also performed there. I am trying to find the date that Cafe Sztuka was closed. The deportations to Treblinka from the Ghetto accelerated in 1942 but can't find the date that the cabaret came to an end. Can anyone advise ? Thank you & regards Michael Bully
According to Szpilman, it was open on Sunday, 19 July, but the owner was aware of the deportations, was visibly shaken, expected the worst. The deportations started on 22 July, it's highly unlikely the cafe was open on that day or later. btw "The deportations to Treblinka from the Ghetto accelerated" is not quite correct. Pre 22 July, there weren't any deportations.
That's great wm. Thank you very much. Indeed, need to reconsider the dates of deportations to Treblinka.
