    That clicking device in "The Longest Day", the one that got Sal Mineo killed because a Mauser '98 sounds exactly like it. What do you call those things? Were they really issued to paratroopers on D-day? Can one still find working samples?

    It was called a 'cricket' and today, original ones are highly sought after by militaria collectors. There are many repro/fake ones available and TBH I have no idea how to identify a genuine one.

    They were available as toys when I was growing up. Most were obviously not originals or even imitations of the military ones.

    A movie-ism... A K98 only sounds like a cricket when it's empty and the magazine follower pops up as the bolt opens.
