I have had a painting in the family for about 50 years. Was wondering if anyone has ever seen any art printed on a canvas like this or would have any input. Thanks!
There was a painter by the name of Karl (or Carl) Probst who died in 1924. If he was the artist, the image in the 3rd photo would have been applied long after his death. I think you would get more information by contacting an art museum where they will have the expertise to research it.
Lovely painting. I'm sure it has quite a history. I haven't seen anything quite like it but I'm all but certain it was a war prize for a German soldier. And was returned to tour family after the war. Am I correct?
Ive just bought a 2 bed apartment in Vilamoura and Im looking for local trades people to carry out a number of tasks for me and also, so I can have a go to "directory" for help in the future. Ive never had a place abroad before so if anyone has any hints, tips or information they feel would help Id be really grateful thank you Jan
If it has the Third Reich's eagle on the back I would say it was "officially" acquired and cataloged. A war prize for the allied soldier that snagged it. I believe Carl Probst and Karl Probst as Carl signed his paintings C Probst and the year whereas this one is totally different. Interesting.
Sorry, my translator translates to french Hello I think it may be this person in attached photo. To check if he painted during his retirement from work? He simply painted on canvas from a jute bag for the transport of German food during ww2 (there are two typical vertical stripes on each side of the eagle). No doubt of recovery after the war. If he painted it in 1946, he must have been 63 (a hobby). The eagle has been repainted over the original because it is of good quality. I hope this is a track for your research.
