Just received WW2 records for family member. He was in the Canadian Forestry Corps

We have been able to decipher a lot of the abbreviation but cannot find reference for NETD.

He was sent to the UK (1942)

    the entry says

SOS R5 CFC (Cat E) to NETD 5th April 1943

    the next entry says

TOS posting from R5 CFC 6 April 1943

So obviously he was transferred from one unit to another, we just cannot figure out what NETD stands for,

    Also the next entry

    P/leave WMa 5 days 21/16 April 1943

so it looks like he took a leave ?personal or Medical assessment?

anyone know what the WMa stands for?

he was eventually struck off service from this unit a month later and sent home unfit so that makes us think it was a medical assessment.

Any help appreciated...this mans history has been a constant source of mystery to his family...All waiting on this information.

    Spartanroller,
I really have great use of your Abbreviations page - thank you for creating and maintaining it. In looking for something today I noticed -
NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization
This did not come into being until 4 April 1949, so I don't think it applies to WWII.
However, NATO was the North African Theater of Operations, which came into being with the TORCH Invasion of Nov. 1942.
And, NATOUSA was North African Theater of Operations, U. S. Army, which was later folded into MTO when the theater broadened into Sicily, Italy, and then southern France.
Eight in my family served in the war, and I have a great deal of material from that time. I am absolutely sure of the above.
    Cheers, T Lee

I am trying to find the meaning of the following abbreviation: MCH SCU 1915. This soldier served in the Army from Dec 1941 to Sept 1945. He was a welder. Looking at the abbreviations for the military on other sites, suggested the scu stood for "small combat unit. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have his discharge documents? Its placement might be able to help us decipher it.

The exact context would be helpful. Posting the document would be ideal.

    (Changing my original post)

I believe it may be "MGH SCU 1915". That would translate to Madigan General Hospital, Service Command Unit 1915. Madigan General Hospital was located at Fort Lewis, Washington.

More on Madigan G. H. here. It's very possible that he was only discharged from there at the end of the War and it ended up on his discharge papers. It was common in the post-War chaos of sending so many troops home that soldiers were assigned to various units to be discharged. Many times it was to a state-side hospital unit.

Thank you for this info. I am helping my local museum collect information on WWII service men and women for a class they offer. They offer a 2 day information fair for the 6th grade students. All the information I have comes from his obituary and family sources. I really appreciate your help with this.

I have been researching the operations of the RAF Bomber Command Squadron 640, which my father flew in.
The Squadron's Operational Record Books contain a lot of abbreviations and I see you don't have all of them. Please add them to your list, to help others doing the same research as myself. Some of them took some finding, and others are still outstanding.

    Ack-Ack Anti-Aircraft guns
    A.P. Aiming Point
    D/R Dead reckoning navigation
GEE A radio navigation system used by the Royal Air Force
    H/F Heavy Flak
H2S (Originally Blind Navigation (BN)). The first airborne, ground scanning radar system, developed for Bomber Command to identify targets on the ground for night and all-weather bombing.
    LD Long Delay (bomb fuse)
    L/F Light Flak
M.B. Master Bomber controlling a bombing action
Monica A tail-gunner warning radar for bombers
    M/Y Marshalling Yard
Orbit Planes circling around a location such as a target or circling nearby, while waiting for instructions
P.I. Port Inner engine of heavy bomber
P.O. Port Outer engine of heavy bomber
S.I. Starboard Inner engine of heavy bomber
S.O. Starboard Outer engine of heavy bomber
    S/L Search Lights
    T/A Target Area
    TD Time Delay (bomb fuse)

I am working on a project related to the logistics side of the ETO. I have come across three abbreviations I cannot find anywhere:
    BUCO, MUVCO, TURCO
They seem to pertain to locations in the UK pertaining to the movement of military assets to Normandy.
    Any help welcome.
    Thanks, TL

Operation NEPTUNE: The Invasion of Normandy, Chapter IV.

    102. B.U.C.O. In order to control and coordinate the Build-up program, and to assure that special requirements or changes in the Army's plan could be met promptly, a body composed of representatives of the Joint Commanders-in-Chief, styled B.U.C.O. (Build-up Control Organization) was set up at the Combined Headquarters, Portsmouth. ANCXF in conjunction with the British Ministry of War Transport and the U.S. War Shipping Administration was responsible for implementing the movements of ships and craft on decisions reached by B.U.C.O. Under B.U.C.O., two control organizations MOVCO and TURCO were responsible for implementing the cross channel movement plan.

    103. T.U.R.C.O. To assist naval shore authorities in the quick turn round of ships and craft, inter-service bodies styled T.U.R.C.O's (Turn Round Control Organization) were set up at the Nore, London, Portsmouth, Newhaven, Portland, Cardiff and Dartsmouth. T.U.R.C.O.'s duties were to collect all ships coming in to find out their state, to supply them with their main requirements, to load and to sail the ships and craft, in convoys or groups, to fulfil the Military Plan.

    104. M.O.V.C.O. To assist the rapid loading of vessels in accordance with authorized priorities, inter-service bodies called M.O.V.C.O's (Movement Control Organization) were set up at embarkation points. Their duties were to assemble the formations, equipment and cargo to be shipped at embarkation points and to direct embarkation so as to fulfill the Military Plan.

Hi everybody I am Hassan from Libya. I am trying to understand some telegrams related to the BMA in Libya circa 1947. It is full of abbreviations that either partially or totally unclear to me.
C.A.2 (a) ---C.A. Civil Affairs but did not get the meaning of 2(a)
C.A.1.2 ------ meaning of 1.2 here is unclear
M.O.1.4 ----- Military Operations but 1.4 is not clear
    P.U.S --- totally unclear
    D.U.S (A) ---- totally unclear

I would be very grateful if you guys would be willing to explain some or all of the above abbreviations

    Thank you in advance

    P.U.S. = Permanent Under-Secretary
    D.U.S. (A) = Deputy Under-Secretary (Army? Algeria?)

The numbers likely are part of a file recording keeping system or refer to specific offices.

    Thank you Richard
using your hints, I checked the structure of the War Office at that time. There was a position titled: Parliamentary Under-Secretary
As for the (A) in D.U.S (A), I couldn't make up my mind. As far as I understand, WAR OFFICE is concerned with the army only, since the other
branches: RAF and Admiralty hare not within the mandate of the WO. hence (A) must refer to something else.
