Hello everyone, so recently I have been wanting to meet a WWII veteran. The problem is, I don't know where to find them. I know there is one around my area, but I have no clue as to how to find them. Is it possible that I can ask the government of my city if they can get a list of the WWII veterans living here? Or is there another process that I have to do to find them. Thanksshareit appvn
If you are located in the USA, try your local American Legion or VFW. And, as OP suggested, check if there are any VA homes near you.
I do not know your age or circumstances. You could volunteer as a chaperon for an Honor Flight. You would be assigned a vet as his assistant. This would allow you to get very close to and intimate with the vet. Time is running out. They are passing away at a great rate. Good luck.
chibobber You say " Time is running out. They are passing away at a great rate " Too bloody true Sir ! Ron (Now aged 96 !)
They'll have to bash you in the head before they close the coffin, Ron. You're the second oldest WWII vet I know.
If you're really serious all the above are great recommendations. Another route would be to contact the local assisted living facilities and ask if any Veterans would like to visit with you. Many don't have family nearby or in some cases are completely alone now. Through the small assisted living place near me I was able to meet a former WW2 B29 Pilot, A Marine flight instructor for basic training. Permission would be needed from any family of course. Believe me it is well worth a few hours time.
You can find veterans' military service records from World War I to the present from the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC). The NPRC houses many types of records, including Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF). shareit vidmate
