Lord Haw-Haw..Germany calling..Germany calling

There were different Lord Haw-Haws but the most famous was William Joyce. Captured after the war and returned to England where he was tried and hanged for treason on 3 Jan 46 and rightfully so.

 

Yeah, he had a wild story. I wrote a display about him for my re-enactment group a while back. I thought it appropriate considering his life in Ireland and Irish heritage. Apparently there was a hit put out on him by the IRA when he was a young lad. I remember there being a thing of wether they should have actually tried him for treason, since his defence claimed his citizenship was void.

 

void? explain please....how did Irish citizenship/etc play into all of it?..I don't know anything about it

 

I don’t think Irish citizenship came into it, I’m not entirely sure he had it. He was being charged on three counts of treason, but he was a naturalised German citizen (his American birth and citizenship was also brought into this). However, after the first 2 charges were dropped it was put forward that he had committed treason before his naturalisation. Therefore they found him guilty and had him executed. It was however brought up during his trial that he had lied on papers to brain citizenship, so therefore he was never entitled to it

 

...so he was Irish at one time? if he wasn't British, American, Russian, or French--or from any country fighting Germany, how could it be treason?
..doing a quick search, sounds like this guy was 'doing a lot of ''treason''...but if became a German citizen, I see some problems with the conviction ..American born, to Ireland, then England, then Germany..??? WTH!!??

I am surprised somebody hasn't made a movie about his life....the first person that came to me was Kevin Spacey..that guy could use a jump start in his career.
