The outer tracks could be detached and joined together to form a trailer to carry various items. This made it narrow and light enough for major roads/bridges. Whilst it was anticipated that the Japanese would build massive concrete bunkers etc it was considered that very heavy artillery could deal with these hence the development of the Little David mortar

 

Septic Armor/Cav museum has been doing some good work on it of late.
First time the secondary tracks have been played with since the 70s IIRC.

Large immobile concrete bunkers = Easy Target = Dinosaur Smash! = Bunker destroyed.

 

It springs from the 'shelled area' concept.
As Chennault mentions - Siegfried line.
Gothic, Wotan, Winter etc, etc. All fed into a rather persistent idea of an extremely heavily armoured machine with a BFG substantial enough to obliterate bunkers & crawl through defences, shrugging off light/medium responses.
The sort of gun that no turreted machine of the era could accommodate.

British version was the Tortoise.
My missus called it 'silly' at Bov recently.

(While grudgingly accepting she might have had a point, and there were solid reasons the concept evaporated.)

Indeed at the time the Germans were talking about an Alpine redoubt (which turned out to be largely a combination of propaganda and wishful thinking) and the Allies expected to have to slug their way through heavily fortified lines

can't get there
the T28 is destroyed or immobilized
can't zero in on the bunker because of no turret
and--how is it going to destroy a bunker when it never made it to war???!!!

Turrets can be immobilized or destroyed...

That the war ended before the weapon system is fielded, is not the fault of the weapon system.

Too late for Siegfried line. Plan was to send it to mainland Japan.

 

But not when originally envisaged.
The truth is it was a specialised weapon for particular circumstances and when these vanished so did the need for it

 

Any info on the ammunition for the 105 mm gun?

 

True, that was the fate of the T28.
