let me say forget the net and purchase some good books on the subject matter, as there is a huge host of published works, especially individual unit histories which will give acct of the hierarchy involved in setting up this multi-faceted units

Erich is right - there is too much unchecked/inaccurate/biased information on the web.

Though written in the 60s, George H Stein's 'The Waffen SS - Hitler's Elite Guard At War' ( recently republished ) is still a good starting point and then there are many, many more recent books.....

There is indeed an incredible amount of material published on the subject. I suggest that, before you buy a title, you do some research as to the credability of the titles, like Martin said. I myself sold off most of my "general" ss books and only have a number of unit histories left. Wish I could remember the titles... [IMG]

BTW Erich, I understand the English translation of the book dealing with the SS divisions in Hungary (Budapest to Wien - 1945) has been released that you were waiting for. Do you have that already and if so, what is your verdict????

no I do not have Drama between Budapest and Wien. 95.00 US for starts, and I am waiting if amzon ever knocks the price down. have heard it is one of the best late war histories of several units wirtten for the text and the excellent maps.

The net is a nice place Richard for quickness of materails downloaded but do not be fooled by what is out there esepcially the fact finding or so-called finding wikpedia. Interview some vets or look into one of the many unit histories that are being republished into English.

I went hog wild in the late 60's early 70's when the German firm Munin Verlag was publishing unit book right and left every year until they folded up and closed shop. their photo clarity is still superior to the English language that JJF pubs has done, but at leat JJF has done it .....

Mark Yergers efforts are also of worthy note through selfpublishing and through the famous Roger james Bender Publishing which has at least 2 books dealing with general SS data

Agreed. Books are the best and the net sites can mostly give only a glimpse of what happened ( the info the sites do have is often great must say ). Unfortunately this means investing alot of time and money in the books but you could invest it a lot worse!
