Can anyone help place the 583 Field Company Royal Engineers. I cant find which Division they were attached to during and after D-Day. Thanks Steve
If you can't find them in any order of battle I suspect your best bet will be to visit the NA to look at the unit's war diary..this will help you track down Brigades etc....
They would serve in an active area, that is the job of a RE Field Company. I looked through my wae papers, cannot find them. That means nothing. Most Fld Cos are Divisional. Mine was 246 Field Company RE. Eighth Brigade. Third British Infantry Division. "Monty's Ironsides"
Hey John, sounds like you might be able to help. I'm looking for anything on the 272nd Field Company of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. All my books are for U.S. units. How are British units broken down, like company, battalion, regiment, etc? Thanks
Hi, The British and Commenwealth engineers were broken down pretty much the same as the U.S. were. There was a Field Company (or Squadron in the Armd Divisions) per brigade (U.S. Regiment). That was 3 field companies and a field park per infantry division under small HQ. Now, was the the 272nd Field Company, R.E. or R.E.M.E.? There is a difference. I know that the 272nd Field Coy., R.E. was part of the 46th Infantry Division. John
John, I was doing some digging to answer your question regarding weather it was the R.E. or R.E.M.E. and learned the 46th division went in on Uncle Green Beach at Salerno on Sept. 9, 1943. This is where he was killed, so guess he was with the 46th. A little help goes a long way-thanks.
