How to Identify WWII US Army "items" with only a picture?

    My grandpa was a Tech Platoon Sergeant in 3-13...eventually 8th, @ Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe.
    I have 2 pictures that I'd love to know what my grandfather is wearing. Everything else I have identified... Any ideas?
    Pic 2 - What Rifle? I know nothing about guns...
    Pic 1 - What Ring? Could they even wear rings?
    Pic 1 - What hung off his belt?

    Perhaps what is attached to his belt is a pocket watch in a holder? Since it has a chain attached to it and that is what my grandfather’s pocket watch had attached to it. Just a guess. And yes, rings to be sure.

    It looks to me that the item attached to his belt is a whistle. I know they were used by various services in WW2. Experts will probably weigh in.
