Wow this is some excellent information! Thank you so much for the details! I just checked with my father and yes, he was indeed Army National Guard when he enlisted. He did indeed know he was going to be drafted, so he enlisted instead. So he must have been attached to the 191st, B Company as you stated. And when he returned from the war, signed up for any future drafts? From the descriptions of my grandmother and the information that I did gather from my grandfather, the series of European travels line up with the entirety of the 191st’s campaign. Would there be anywhere I can find photo documentation of the 191st and their travels? Any further details regarding B Company?
He actually enlisted in the 26th Tank Company, Massachusetts NG, which was technically a part of the 26th Division. It was federalized and organized with three other NG Tank Companies (27th New York NG, which became Company A, 29th Virginia NG, which became Company C, and 43d Connecticut NG, which became Company D). Yes, when he was discharged he would have been required to register for the draft. Photo documentation would require a visit to the National Archives, although there are probably some online. The written battalion history is available at World War II Operational Documents
Hello guys, Im looking for information on Charles W. Keyser who served in "A" Company 191st Tank Battalion and was present for the battle at Anzio February 16th 1944. Ive look everywhere and cant find much information on him. Tried to dig up general orders with no avail too. Any info especially an ASN would be amazing!
Unfortunately I do not, I've tried fold3 with not much luck. The Charles W. Keyser I'm researching is from Middleton PA. I'm trying to confirm whether he was the same Charles W. keyser with "A" Co. 191st Tank Bn. I do have a serial number for the one im researching, pretty uncommon name so I would think the odds are good?
I think it's the same guy. Check here. It's part of a book, but I don't have the energy to read through the whole thing. Anzio Beachhead: The Major German Offensive (16-20 February)
I did find that article, and read the bit that mentioned Charles W. Keyser. I believe the guy I'm researching is the same one in this battalion. Although I do know some members have had luck finding general orders and other documents like rosters so I was hoping someone could come up with his ASN or hometown to confirm 100% that what I have is the guy in 191st.
If anyone is still on this page, is it possible for me to get a PDF copy of those After Action Reports? I am really interested in the details they contain. Thanks. Normally don't use forums but i'm trying to learn.
I come here now and then to remember my dad. I've read some after action reports but don't know about getting copies in PDF format. FYI, I've made requests from the National Personnel Records Center www.archives.gov for my dad's military records only to discover that his records were destroyed in the fire of July 12, 1973 at the records center. Request Sept. 2019 and haven't followed up due to death in my family, Covid year, etc, etc. Good luck in your search. Kevin Bynum son of David Melton Bynum Tech 5 Co. A, 191st Tank Bn.
Charles William Keyser, ASN 35379279, was a member of the 191st Tank Bn. According to his Draft Card, he lived in New Athens, Harrison County, Ohio. Born in 1911 in Harrisville, Ohio, he died in 1983 in Cadiz, Ohio. While a member of A Company, 191st, he received the Distinguished Service Cross per General Orders 91, HQ, Fifth Army, dated 29 May 1944 for "extraordinary heroism in action, on 16 February 1944, near Anzio, Italy."
