Finland axis or allied or independant

theres lots of sites that don't seem to know some say one others the other some stay the neutral road. The Finnish however seem to have fought both sides first the soviets then the Germans. They were kinda in a in between region.

 

Co-belligerents with the Germans.
Not allies per se.
Were not allies to the Soviets either.
It was part of the peace deal to forcefully remove the German forces.

 

I think hitler supplied them with tanks and planes as to have them keep,soviets forces busy and keep being a thorn in their sides. Then got a bit greedy and the Finnish army had to kick them out of Finland but it is a strande kind of situation they were in not really on anyone's side or ally.

 

The secret protocol gave Finland to the USSR, but our fighting spirit won their massive army. Finnish people would have been sent to Siberia. We would have been cut to pieces like Poland. Stalin created in Dec 1939 a new communistic government that was the only one he would negotiate with, the Kuusinen government. Not the one chosen by Finnish people. The western Allied ended in the same position as with Poland, we were too far away for help, but Sweden helped us as they knew the Red Army would not stop. In 1940 the Europe was divided between Hitler and Stalin. Our politicians went to meet other politicians all over Europe, and even Hitler denied any help. Italy sent planes and guns, but Hitler stopped the help before it got out of Germany. Mussolini was mad about the Soviet-German treaty and threatened to get out of the pact of iron, also the Japanese got their suspicions and probably never trusted Hitler again. Until late 1940 Hitler had no problem giving Finland to Stalin, and never helped us. We remembered this.
As for the Germans, as Hitler had made ther Barbarossa, troops went to northern Finland through Finland, Norway and Sweden, but never managed to attack all the way to Murmansk. We had a line where Germans held the Lapland and attacked from there, and Finns held the southern part. We simply had not enough men. Germany sent us wheat, and towards the 1944 big battles a couple of divisions, sold Stugs ( in tens not hundreds, no Panthers or Tigers or PZ IV´s ). We discussed about peace with the Soviets in 1943, and early 1944, and Hitler stopped sending help. However, as he lost more and more axis countries, he noticed he had to co-operate with Finland.
Interesting that Winston waited until December to declare war to Finland, when Barbarossa begun in June. Also FDR warned Finland that if we take the Murmansk train road, we would pay for it after the war. Practically since late 1941 to Jube 1944 our soldiers simply held their positions, we did not attack further. It´s a miracle Hitler did not get mad. Many Finns consider that the USSR did not want Finland in the end because we did not attack and take Leningrad or go further and take the Murmansk railroad. We made peace with the Soviets in September 1944, and one requirement was that we drive the Germans out of Finland. That we did.
If Finland was an axis country, why would the USSR not be due to Ribbentrop pact which divided Europe between Hitler and Stalin, and allowed Hitler to attack Poland and France without fear of an attack in their back?

If the Soviets had been better prepared in Winter War we would be a fly´s little c**** spot on paper and you would not think about us in historical perspective. Even Hitler in 1940 was ready to offer us to Stalin, not until we showed that battling hard against the Red Army Hitler changed his mind.

Also if you consider different countries there were Hitler admirers in Allied countries and volunteers to join the SS troops. Anti-semitism was strong in Europe, and pro-people wanted to get the "lower class people" and Jews to camps and very probably kill them.

And still exist...unfortunately.

 

And Btv, Mannerheim did not allow the Finnish SS-men fight in the west. Only the Soviets.
