I have read the book Thunder Below and it was ok. But I was just wondering if anyone can suggest what, in their opinion, is a good book to read on the subject of WWII in the Pacific with U.S. submarines, non fiction. Thanks
I second Clear the Bridge as well as O'Kane's Wahoo. Clay Blair's Silent Victory is the go-to reference for US submarine operations Silent Running by Vice Admiral James Calvert is excellent. Take Her Deep! by Admiral I.J. Gallantin is good. Submarine! by Commander Edward Beach
Thanks very much, I ordered Silent Running. I read some of the reviews of the mentioned books, on Amazon, and I know there are always some readers who have something negative to say, but most on all of the books mentioned are positive, five stars. So, I picked one. I appreciate all of your replies. And I almost forgot that I had read the book, USS Seawolf, Submarine Raider of the Pacific.
Thanks! And right now on Comcast on Demand, free WWII movies, Run Silent Run Deep with Clark Gable is showing. I plan to watch it tomorrow.
Hoyt was mentioned and while he is good at writing, I don't see any original research. I may be wrong on this as I've only read a few of his books. Clay Blair's Silent Victory has been mentioned and has no shortage of original research, but is dry. Ruhr's War on the Boats is good and Ruhr served aboard subs. I got that for a colleague of mine since her father was aboard the same boat. Theodore Roscoe's US Submarine Operations in WW II is a classic.
