Hi All, Thought I would share photos of the display in my home office. I've been collecting militaria for close to 15 years, and source most of my finds locally. I've been very lucky as a collector to find some pretty amazing items, many with a personal history. I focus mainly on US items from SpanAm throughVietnam. Hope you enjoy the photos, and feel free to ask any questions. Feedback good and bad is always welcomed. Thanks!
Far out mate! Thats a collection and a half...Plenty to get you into the WW2 mood...Still is missing an Australian Slouch hat... Vietnam Slouch A couple of legends (inlcuding dog Caesar) - with Boonie or Giggle hat WW2 Slouch
Great photos! I don't find much commonwealth gear around here, although I've seen a couple Vietnam era slouch hats while out and about. I'm always afraid they're not original, though. My father in-law served alongside quite a few Aussies during Vietnam. Wound up linking up with a few at a reunion years later. They gave him a Rising Sun Badge, which I have tucked away for safe keeping to pass down to my kids with his other items.
Mate if it is made by Akubra its original... "The Akubra Military Slouch Hat is a staple in Australian history. Akubra have produced the world famous Military Slouch hat for more than 100 years from the start of World War I, and will continue to do so for years to come. Features: Made from Akubra's Superfine Quality Pure Fur Felt." The rising sun badge is an awesome addition to your collection (especially one thats seen service) - Lucky dog. The badge undergoes changes every so often so dont be too put off if it looks a little different from others... Taken from the original design.....
Did you ever find out was SPC on the pith helmet meant ? I looked it up but only found an old thread of yours from 2012 . M1881 Officer's Visor Helmet
Very nice collection indeed! Used to have a slouch hat in a similar camo scheme to that one, c.1980. Don't know if it was actually Aussie or not, I just assumed it was.
Yeah there are a few different bands…Some have changed over the years, others might signify a reserve unit , cadets etc… Here’s a great quick run through: https://www.army.gov.au/our-heritage/traditions/slouch-hat There are some fake hats out there…but if it’s an Akubra, it’s real. Having said that, I’m not sure Akubra still make them as they started to get too expensive per unit…Just checked, yep they still make them. : )
Unfortunately, I was never able to figure that out. Could be state militia or a military school. Info lost to time. It is named, however I haven't had much success with a solid ID.
Thanks! It was a random FB Marketplace find. I wound up linking up with the Vet's son, who allowed me to make copies of photos and paperwork from his father's service. His father was a mechanic, who enlisted in 1942, and served overseas from May 1945 to February 1946. He came home, reenlisted, and went career serving on what was once the Willow Grove Naval Air Station. He retired from the Navy in 1962. Vet is on the right
Thanks for that! If I come across another, I'll keep that info in mind. So I was completely wrong. The badge is actually for the Australian Engineers. Not sure how I confused the two. Definitely a later piece, and not used "in-country". I do have a rising sun badge. I was included in a mixed lot, so no story to go with it. Based on the King's crown, this would be pre-1952, correct? Was never able to confirm if WWI or WWII vintage.
The badge looks dark and therefore older…also looks smaller…so also older…but I’m not an expert. When I worked for Defence, I walked into the Q store and was given a bag of all the corps badges…I have a couple of full sets somewhere…
Thanks again, Rich! I much prefer a clean look. Limits me, because there are definitely other items I won't display, that I wish I could (helmets and soft visors/hats mostly). I can appreciate a good display with no empty spaces, though!
