I have a large group of items to a vet who served stateside with the 4th Infantry Division, then later overseas with the 101st Airborne Division. He was an amateur photographer, and took some pretty decent photos documenting his service. The photos below were mostly all digitized from developed negatives. A few scans of phots included as well. Photos show the artwork pilfered by Goering, and recovered in the Berchtesgaden area. A burial at an overseas cemetery, Damage to the Eagle's Nest, candid shots around Berchtesgaden, and the voyage home stateside. I've also included a few studio portraits of the vet, wartime and post-war, and some candid shots, one or two of which were taken in Bastogne.
Thanks, all! Glad you enjoyed. All of the negatives were in a cigar box. When I started looking through them, you can imagine my amazement at the content. I wound up sharing the photos of the artwork with Robert Edsel, author of "The Monuments Men", and founder of the Monuments Men Foundation. He and his team were able to provide the below info on each piece of artwork, for anyone interested.
Outstanding photos! Thanks for sharing! Photo taken on the Konigsee in Berchtesgaden is particularly noteworthy. I know that spot very well, and I'm certain I have photos of almost exactly the same location today. The building visible in the background is a boathouse for one of the many tourboats on the lake located at the north end of the lake. Go back about 10 years and there's a well-known sequence of Eva Braun and friends posing in the same location.
Not to mention, squeezed in there, is apparently a shot of what looks to be an Omaha class light cruiser, perhaps USS Marblehead.
Thanks, Gentlemen. I appreciate the additional information on the locations, etc. I'm familiar with the Eva Braun video you mentioned, but didn't realize it was the same body of water. Interesting for sure.
