Interesting document on Finnish soldiers last night about sept 1941 when the Finnish Army was about to cross the "old borderline" i.e. the borderline before the Winter War, and several soldiers refused to cross it because they were not "conquerors" but only wanted what was theirs originally. In some regiments up to 200 soldiers could refuse to go on which would be seen as mutiny in many armies. In the end some 15-20 men were shot and several hundreds had to give away their guns and cocards, and ended probably in a prison for awile and then sent to penalty units. Most soldiers decided to continue after MannerheimĀ“s request to continue in order to end the war fast and reach peace.( which did not happen but Mannerheim was so good with words that even the most stubborn Finnish soldier agreed mostly to continue...)
Not to change the direction of the thread, but I have read about the Finns reluctance to advance deeper into Russian territory than they did, much to the chagrin of the Germans. But I have never come across information about the desertions, ect. I do understand their reasons, and apparantly it paid off later when the fortunes of war turned against Finland. The Soviets did not occupy as much Finnish territory as they could have. The individual Finnish soldiers not wanting to cross the 1939 border reminds me of the problems of the Confederate Army in 1862 and 1863 during General Lee's northern offensives. Many Confederate soldiers deserted rather than go north, as they felt that they signed on to defend their homeland in the south against the "dastardly Yankee invaders." In their mind, they'd be no better than the Yankees hordes coming south. Ok, back to "What have you been watching?" Me, mostly just surfing the channels, up then down. I stop on the usual points of interest, Scrubs (sorry Carl, I think it's funny), Futurama reruns, the Simpsons, King of the Hill, and the occasional interesting movie that shows up from time to time. I have tried to get used to Conan O'Brien, but just can't do it just yet. Late night TV for me is what title that I have in from Netflix.
Hi Keystone/A/ Keystone-thanks for the tip on that movie-ill definately let it fade to dusty memory ;-)) I alos heard that the original "Dawn of the Dead" was pretty disgusting as well. A/ no prob/ I do "see" the humor in the show-I just hate the show. ;-)
I watched The bridge on the river Kwai this morning. Very good film but could be about 30 minutes shorter. But I think that it does a good job in putting across that war is mad.
Why couldn't the powers-that-be just have RAF just fly out and bomb the bridge, instead of pinning their hopes on a cross-country effort of a small unit who may or may not make it to the bridge, or to actually blow it up if and when they got there? That question always lingered in my mind. Good movie though, don't get me wrong.
Damn it Bobby...........you need to realize that the internet has more than porn and old TV shows: The Bridge on the River Kwai - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia William Holden is cool and all; but, there is no way he could blow up a bridge built by a Jedi master. Hell Huck Finn couldn't even save him when he was shot down in Korea. Brad
And you base your knowledge on wikipedia, eh? You are right in one aspect. William Holden was very cool, but had a problem with bridges in wartime.... So, what is wrong with old TV shows and porn anyway Mr. Funnyman?
No I refer to wikipedia, out of courtesy to you, because it is written at a 6th grade level. To write it any more simple would require the use of crayons.
Ok...that's it....as soon as I can think of something witty and cool I will blast you a good one there pal.... 6th grade level my a$$....
SPR, The Longest Day and some English WWII movie was on in the past few days. I wathced most of all of them and saw TBOTRK yesterday ;-)) William Holden is Cool: "Kill EM!! Kill EM!!!" To the Jedi master he said: "Youuuuuuuuu," and died. Oh and, he had trouble with Apach Indians as well as Mexican Revolutionaries ;-D
I just finished Band of Brothers [the only movie/mini-series that has made me actually tear up] I watched Letters from Iwo Jima last night, not what I expected. I'm going to watch The Great Raid right now. [I'm trying to catch up on all these movies, haha]
Last night was 'Two Men Went To War' A "true" story about two British (v-e-d-d-d-y BRITISH) Army dentists that go AWOL, steal a boat and stage a two-man invasion of France, 'kicking the door down' to Fortress Europe 2 years before D-Day. Their first goal was to sink the Scharnhorst and Gneisnau with a couple of strategically placed hand grenades, but en route they read about the 'Channel Dash' ("...buggah!") and are forced to improvise. What a hoot! A thoroughly enjoyable film... I'm still chuckling about those two nimrods! Highly recommended! Tonight, I'll start on 'Piece of Cake' -whatever -Lou
Update: The Great Raid was okay, nothing really redeeming about it that would make me want to watch it again. ******MINI-SPOILERS******* I liked the footage at beginning and end, though.
Ah yessss, The Horse Soldiers. I love that movie. Did you know that the "Slave Woman" (Luki,SP?) Althea Gibson, was a Tennis Star and who sadly, passed away within the past few years. Thanks for reviving T.H.S for me, it's been about a year and a half since I last watched it and will do so again this week ;-)) I did get my "fill" of Duke last week because I watched both Rio Bravo and Chisum-twice each. I never tire of Rio Bravo. "Carlos:" "She gave me the eye." Stumpy: "Old Cripple. Call me an old cripple-and I have to fix your supper tonight Joe-call me an old cripple". Mr. Wheeler: "Don't they call you Borcheen?" Dude: "Borochon Mr. Wheeler." Colorado: "He's talkin now, you know that piece? it's the De Guello-the song that Santa Anna had played for the boys down at the Alamo." Chance: "It means no quarter." Sheriff John T. Chance: "Stumpy, your a treasure."
You are right on that one scarface, that was a good movie. I watched it a few months ago. Supposedly it is based on a true story of sorts, but I couldn't find much on it.
Hey Carl, I didn't know about Althea Gibson in the movie being the tennis player, one in the same. I have "The Horse Soldiers" on VHS, but I don't have a VHS player any more. I just pull up some well remembered scenes on youtube for a refresher. The cadets marching out from the military school for one. Great scene. I noticed that in "Rio Bravo" they used the same jail that was used in "El Dorado." I liked "El Dorado" better though.
