He was relieved of his command and put in charge of a small naval flotilla in the Marianas. He shot himself on Saipan just before the American invasion on July 1, 1944.

Both the German Commander, Commodore Bonte, and the British Commander, Captain Warburton-Lee, were killed in the battle.
