Not bad, Framert. Your turn.
The other would be English ambassador Henderson.

They never saw action?
They were due to go on Operation Varsity but due to a lack of transport planes they went into Corps reserve and the war ended before they saw combat.

Thanks for the web site on the British aircraft Knight.
I was looking at their picture of the Martin-Baker MB-5 and it looks very much like a P-51D at the angle they took the picture.

Ok...
If you swap 2 letters in the German title of this famous German song, you get its international title. Which song?

In the Spring of 1945,a US Engineer Battalion constructed what was, at the time, reckoned to be 'The Longest Tactical Bridge Built' at 1032 feet.
Which Battalion, and where was the bridge ?

1945? That must be over the Rhine, but I think that's as far as I can get…

"The Battalion performed admirably, bridging the Rhine at Niedersbrseig (Honningen) in under 14 hours and in the process constructed the world's longest tactical floating bridge. At 1,370 feet, it stood as a marvel of combat engineering. The bridge saw extremely heavy use. Actual bridge construction took a mere 12 hours. There was a two hour delay waiting for material! Within five days of its completion, 6,378 vehicles in various convoys including many Sherman and medium tanks had crossed, plus the normal traffic"
The 254th???
"In advance, the 254th had practiced in England until they were able to construct floating bridge equipment at a rate of 220 feet in 42 minutes. The actual bridge construction started early in the morning on March 22 with Company B installing the critically important upstream cable."

Which just goes to show that you can never rely on US Engineers' boastfulness !
Well done, RB, BUT - not quite the one I'm looking for, even though I reckon yours was actually the longest. Let's just say that 'my' one was 'claimed to be....'
A clue - the action it was associated with was made into a ( rather good ) movie.....

"The Bridge at Remagen", "The bridge over the River Kwai", "A Bridge too far", "The Bridges of Madison County"?
All the bridge-films I can recall…

( Sigh ! ) Now come on, Friedrich.....there weren't many US Engineer Battalions involved at the River Kwai, and not much happened at Madison County in early 1945.....

March 10
To free the captured Ludendorff Bridge for repairs, the 291st Engineer Combat Battalion, assisted by the 988th and 998th Engineer Treadway Bridge Companies, erected a 1,032-foot, Class-40 steel treadway bridge just south of the Ludendorff Bridge. It opened to traffic on 11 March and vas the first American floating bridge over the Rhine.
But Remagen is correct.

Btw, Martin, why don't you answer my solution in the movie quiz?
