It is very tough Kai, as it is only a short paragraph in the book. Here is a clue, the crutches were due to injuries sustained in combat.

Since it has to do with monkeys, I am thinking someplace in the Pacific so I will venture a wild guess and say "God is My Copilot" by a pilot in the AVG Flying Tigers.

Great guess TA152 but no.
Another couple hints, the monkey was in a zoo, and the author was a pilot.

Welcome to the Forums Faus, it's always good to "see" new faces.
It's a very tough question indeed, so some more hints: the pilot writes of flying ops against US and Russian aircraft, and was an ace.

It is Rudel in 'Stuka Pilot' .
On p 229 of the first edition he describes being taken for a walk in the Berlin Zoo in March 1945 after his operation - an ape in the monkey house reaches through the cage and grabs one of Rudel's crutches moments before an air raid warning.

In his war memoir, Winston Churchill made this comment ; -
'...the heroic characteristics of the **** race must not blind us to their record of folly and ingratitude which over centuries has led them through measureless suffering.....'
To which Nation was he referring ?
