Ha! I knew the code for being attacked by a sub was SSS, a quick search reveals the raider signal was RRR (I hope).

I believe it is four R's rather than three.
SSSS would indicate an attack by U-boats and AAAA for aircraft for example.

There are four letters indeed but none of the answers is correct so far. The answer can be found in the net, I just checked! And the letter has nothing to do with R for raider.

The message meant "suspicious ship sighted".

Prior to their entry in war, one airforce fitted one of their British made fighters with a German engine. Name the airforce, the fighter and the reason why they did it?

I became curious about this subject and did some further reading, which has revealed that there are indeed several correct answers in this thread! British vessels originally sent their morse codes in three groups of three letters each, this was later changed to three groups with four letters each.

The QQQ or QQQQ signal was indeed the "suspicious ship" signal mentioned. When/if the suspicious ship was positively identified as a hostile "armed raider" the signal RRR or RRRR was sent. Often the raiders blew the radio-masts off before this second signal could be sent however.

As an interesting aside, I see that the changed number of letters spelt the end of the Atlantis, as she tried to bluff HMS Devonshire by sending RRR without realizing that the Allied procedure had been changed to RRRR!

Well, I have learnt something new today...

Well, you got the fighter right, got very close with the reason, but the airforce is much smaller.

Then was it Yugoslavia ? At the beginning of the war, Yugoslavia had had 38 Hurricanes, 15 of these had been built there under licence.

As they also had 70 Bf109Es, I'm guessing that some engines may have ben swapped...?

Well done, you got it.
And the reason was:
Quote:
It had originally been planed to power later IK-3s with new 1,100 h.p. Hispano-Suiza 12Y-51 engine, the German occupation of France had frustrated this plan, and it therefore become necessary to consider a British or German engine. The Air Ministry favored the DB 601 A, and as part of IK-3 development program, the Daimler-Benz engine was installed experimentally in a Hurricane airframe in 1940. The conversion was extremely successful, and experimental aircraft displayed better take-off performance and climb rate than either the standard Hurricane or the Bf 109 E-3 and was only slightly slower than the latter.
Quote from IK-3
Please, continue.

Thanks Hamburg - that was a good one ; I'd not been previously aware of this.

The weather here has just turned hot so I'll do a nice easy one...

Who was the most highly-decorated fighter pilot in the RAF & Commonwealth Air Forces to survive WWII ?

Thank you for that question Martin. I did not know about the man so I looked it up at http://www.tauntonschool.co.uk/alumn...es/BRAHAM.html and learned alot about him. How sad it was to read of him surviving WWII and being a POW, and a number of flying accidents only to have a brain tumor nail him at 53!!
