When you get to the bottom of it can you pardon my curiosity and tell the potato-peeling story?

Well, rather than wait until next Christmas, it looks like no-ones going to 'get' this one....
Answers were : -
306th BG ( author Lay multiplied by 3 to get the 918th.. )
They flew from Thurleigh
When the top-brass arrived to present heir MOH winner, Sgt. Maynard H ( 'Snuffy') Smith, with his award, he was peeling potatoes as punishment for a regulation infringement....
Next question :
Germany supplied one Fw 190A-6 to Japan to evaluate during WWII.
What code-name was given to it by the Allies ?

He was an actor in real life, but it was during the war that he got chosen for a role of his lifetime - impersonating the great general. He was chosen for that role by another famous actor.
Name both actors and the general.

Ok, complete guess. Clifton James, recommended by Larry Olivier to play Montgomery, since he was his spitting image.

Cheers Martin....caught me on the hop there!
Ok. Went the Day Well is a classic British wartime movie, and found echoes in The Eagle has Landed.
Name the original short story-and it's author- on which Went the Day Well was based?

Well done Mich...err, Martin, It was indeed The Lieutenant died Last by Graham Greene. Over to you.
Still think The Eagle has Landed was an obvious rip-off though.

Here comes what should be a nice easy one....
Which fighter pilot was credited with the most claimed aerial combat victories in one day - a world record which, I believe, stands to this day.

Over to you....
