WWII Forums Quiz Part VI
Continued from here:
Quiz Part V
That last thread was getting a tad cumbersome, I'll make a new one once the post count reaches 1,000 in this new thread.
A little math for those keeping count:
Quiz I thread = 218 posts
Quiz II thread = 320 posts
Quiz III thread = 384 posts
Quiz IV thread = 371 posts
Quiz V thread = 1012 posts
---------------------------
= 2305 posts, and counting...
This is the continuation of the WWII Quiz thread. The rules are as before: To earn the right to pose a question, you must be the first to answer the current question correctly. You must however wait for confirmation that you are correct before you can ask your question.
I'm not sure who is up next...

Ok, which aircraft carrier or class of aircraft carrier in WW 2 had the largest hanger area? Bonus: List the square feet.

I had two carriers in mind when I started looking for information on exact square footage. Since I was not able to find any square footage listings I am going with my first instinct and say it was the Lexington class ships USS Lexington CV-2 and USS Saratoga CV-3.
As these hulls were converted from battle cruisers I believe they were the largest until the Midway class carriers post war.

I ask an 'easy' question and...
Anyway, it was the HMS Ark Royal. The upper hanger was 60 x 568 and the lower was 60 x 452 for a total area of 52, 580 sq ft. This wasn't exceeded until the US began building super carriers post war.

Well, let's try this again:
This British demolition device was originally slated for use on D-day to demolish the seawalls found on the various beaches. It was a remote controlled, rocket propelled rolling bomb. What was it called?

Yes, the Great Panjandrum. Another classic case of British boffin eccentricity! Your go Martin.

Thank you, T.A.
Western Desert, 1942 - whose wire-netting desert headquarters so appalled Montgomery that he dubbed it 'the meat locker'....?

General Claude Auchinleck? Just a guess, but its more response than we seem to otherwise be getting.
Or, possibly Freyburg of the New Zealand Division.

Ok,
What was the last USAAF kill recorded in the ETO? Hint: The pilot was Lt. Duwayne Francis. What was his aircraft and what did he shoot down?

That's the one. Lt Dewayne Francis and his observer Lt. Martin of the 5th Armored division shot down a Fiesler Storch using their .45 cal pistols in late April 1945. The aircraft was named "Miss Me," an L-4B Piper Cub.
Your turn TA152
