you're ruining my philosophy for the lazy, Martin ...don't make me go look it up. But right now all I got is bullets and tracers and all I can come up with is he created the modern machine-gun or he created tracers...

Did he invent/introduce some kind of cockpit clock? Maybe he belonged to S. Smith & Sons ?
If not, I give up.

Here's a most unusual clue, and if no-one gets it this time I'll give up !
The answer has actually been given by another forum member, in another thread, in a posting made this very day....

Wild guesses, de wrong answers...and Tony Williams mentioned it yesterday
Smith invented the 'de Wilde' explosive .303 round used in limited numbers, but with great effect by Fighter Command's better shots such as Stanford Tuck.
To confuse the issue, he did not invent the real 'de Wilde' round which came from Switzerland but the British round was allegedly named thus to confuse the Germans as the real dW was difficult and time-consuming to produce - Major Smith's bullet was quicker to make.
Over to you, KM - the effort of giving all the clues has given me a headache...

In fact Friedrich deserves the honor, his guess was closer... but Martin: I don't think anybody goes wild in here for not having found this out - most of us are *not* ammunition buffs, you know

Erm, Martin...
The British "de Wilde" bullets were the invention of C. Aubrey Dixon, a Captain in the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment (he retired with the rank of Brigadier), one of the unsung heroes of the Battle of Britain.

During the Battle of Britain, the British used the Dixon-De Wilde round for similar purposes, and pilots generally felt that this was extremely useful.

You didn't mix up a name by any chance, hmmmmmm?

Whoops ! Sorry - in that case you definitely deserve the next question, KM !
I shall now do the decent thing - a revolver loaded with one ( de Wide, of course ! ) round, and....

Ok. What was the name of the ultimate German flak tank, of which only a one-digit number could be produced until the war was over?

Aw crap I won! As I haven't been following this thread from its inception, give me about 4 hours to go home and dig something out! What kind of stuff has been done to death? I seen quite a few mechanised questions and munitions questions.

Ok guys,
Hope this is not ridiculously easy. This is from a collection of private photos, so I hope its reasonably obscure.
I won't even say what country its from.
Can anyone tell me what both items are, the one in the foreground and the one in the foxhole behind it. Also what are they both used for.

The one at foreground: Komandohilfegerät 35, an antiaircraft gun director, a sort of mechanical computer
at background: EmR 4m R40 ? a 4m base rangefinder.
The both equipment were used with German heavy AAA
Regards, Juha

I'm impressed!
That is correct for the item in the foreground, the item in the background, I'll let you have it. Its a listening device for Aircraft out of range of sight I believe.
Over to you Juha!
