Thanks, Kai. I guess it had to be Finland really, didn't it.

Where was the 1961 film "The Guns of Navarone" filmed?

Hi Nr 9---I don't know--I think that that was what the film doc has said--that that term was used in the destruction of the 3 dams--or--you might be correct. I'll have to wait to see when they play this again on the History Channel.

Kai--I think Stalingrad was filmed in Rumania or Hungary? but I don't know the name of the town it was filmed at. I know that it was an actual town but was abandoned for some reason or other.

Your right Carl. "Nigger" was the call sign for breaching one of the Dams. The Mohne if I remember correctly

Question

For the record, the codeword was 'Nigger' for the Mohne and 'Dinghy' for the Eder...

'The Guns of Navarone' was filmed, I think, on the island of Rhodes and at Shepperton Studios...?

Martin--your correct. The Guns Of navarone was filmed on the Island of Rhodes.

They even were visited on the set by some royalty. There are some well-publicised pictures showing the cast and crew playing games of chess--as well as with the royalty.

Great actor Anthouny Quinn was quite the chess player and consistantly beat any challengers untill David Nivens son arrived on the set. He was the only member to beat Anthony Quinn in a chess game--and Anthony Quinn also beat Nivens son in a match.

According to my sources, "Guns" was filmed on Rhodes and at a place called Iverson Ranch in Chatsworth L.A., CA.

So "Guns" isn't listed there. But according to

http://us.imdb.com/Locations?0054953

it should be. Someone made a booboo, methinks.

Even more

Must be the only film shot at Rhodes and Shepperton, edited at Elstree, made by Associated British Films - and they shipped it over to the Iverson Ranch...?

Guess that's what happens when the budget's big enough ! Over to you...

OK guys, I'm confused now.

Whos turn to ask a question is it? Martin got Rhodes correct so I vote it is his turn.

It was my question so I exclude myself.

OK - let's move to another theatre ( )..

When preparing to make 'PT-109' in 1961, the film makers couldn't find any real PT boats. So what did they do ?

Realized that it wasnt their Intention to make the movie historically accurate. And that their goal was in fact to produce a propaganda film for John Kennedy.

May all Kennedy's by name, by marriage (except Arnold) Burn in hell

Wow GE, you sure do go against the main stream of public opinion!! I'm not for or against the Kennedy clan but they sure got you going.

I have seen the movie PT-109 years ago but I don't remember it being all that bad as compared to most Hollywood war movies. About all I can remember was it was filmed in B&W.

I would like to hear about your cripes on the Kennedy's in the FF zone if you want to post them and start a hot thread.

I can't help with this one. I know nothing about these ships, except to say that they found 'PT-109' in May last year.

A certain Dr Robert Ballard was involved in finding it after nealy 60 years on the bottom, having been sunk in August 1943

I don't know the answer to the question but--I thought Cliff Robertson did a great job as Jack Kennedy, and Ty Hardin did an excellent job as Lt Thom. Other good actors in the movie--Norman Fell, and the controversial Bobby Blake.

Oh and the film was filmed in Color--not B&W I jusat saw it very recently on TCM and it was still very entertaining.

I don't care much for the Kennedy clan myself but--I don't hate them.
