Re: WWII Forums Quiz Part VII
Okay.... I'm having a little trouble here coming up with something suitably challenging for this board of WWII geniuses.... so, I'm just going to throw it open....
.... first person that comes up with a good question, go ahead and post it.

Re: WWII Forums Quiz Part VII
I'll take it Lou,
Slava had better get this one.
In the early days of of the war in 1941, this Russian general led a counter-attack against German tanks armed only with a pistol. Who was he?

Kliment Voroshilov
What was the codename for the device that provided a diversion for the first U.S. bombing raid over Europe in 1942?

Re: WWII Forums Quiz Part VII
Wow.... I'm coming up a crapper here....
my digging has come up with the following:
on July 4, '42 - there was a raid by 12 RAF-marked Bostons (A-20's), 6 of which were crewed by American 8th Air Force crews. The targets were 4 airfields in Holland.
on July 12, '42 - 6 RAF-marked Bostons with American 8th Air Force crews raided the airfield at Abbeville.
on August 17, '42 - 12 8th Air Force B-17's conducted the first B-17 raid of the war. The target was the Rouen marshalling yards, and the diversion was an attack/feint by 6 B-17's on the French coast.
I find no mention of a 'diversionary device' in either of my sources*.
How about a hint??

Re: WWII Forums Quiz Part VII
This may be an obscure bit of information, so, I'll just go ahead and give it to you...almost...
It was developed by a team of Brits under Sir Robert Cockburn...

Re: WWII Forums Quiz Part VII
Okay - I'll dive in here to keep things moving along:
We're all familiar with British Operation 'Chastise' (the Dambusters raid) against the hydroelectric dams in Germany carried out by a squadron of Lancasters equipped with specially designed spinning 'depth charge' bombs that skipped across the water until they struck the dam, and then sank and detonated.
The question is:
What other country developed a similar technology, and when, where and against what target did they use it?
....the clock is ticking, gentlemen.

Re: WWII Forums Quiz Part VII
Germany and the USSR both had their versions of the bouncing bombs.
The Germans tried to deploy this weapon against the British shipping but was unsuccesful, infact more on the lines of a disaster.
The USSR used this weapon in the sinking of the German anti-aircraft cruiser Niobe in Kotka, Finland on 16 July 1944.

Re: WWII Forums Quiz Part VII
Ok, I am one of the few Americans which doubted German success in Russia from the very start. I have met with Stalin on several occasions representing the United States and did not denounce Communism, as a result I bumped heads with other officials but had full support from Roosevelt.....
Who am I?
