Another math question..."sorry scarface"

What number is the difference between the number of "Pilots" trained by the USAAF in World War II, and the number who "Washed Out" ?

hint
193,440 "passed" their training.

within a thousand...good enough

My source was not that specific as to what it all encompassed, I assume (I know what that divides into), just the ones who got an "F" in class....and became waist gunners, tail gunners, radio operators, flight engineers, and navigators (that is "if" any of those required .... less than the pilot seat did)

Ja Gut !

A (another) German secret weapon, used successfully once/one time/one engagement/battle (that I know of), before Allied counter-measures negated it's advantage. All that R&D down the drain again.
First appeared in mid 1943.
Can you name it ? (bonus points for the counter measure)

It's most vaunted success came against Convoy HX 229, by Group Leuthen.
When tried again against SC 143, Group Schlieffen got "Spanked".
Said to be, "The last dying struggle of a caged tiger".

Yes indeed, the Zaunkonig torpedo, which was designed to home on to the precise pitch of the sounds generated by an escort vessel's propellers.
After months of uneventful convoy passage across the Atlantic the escorts were eager for the fray but they did not at first appreciate that they were the principle targets of the attack.
3 escorts and 6 merchantmen destroyed from a convoy of 66 vessels, protected by a powerful combined escort of 15 warships, for a loss of 3 U-Boats.
A counter-measure called "Foxer" was a pair of noisemakers towed astern of an escort, which negated future lopsided success's.

Your go.
