Well, Good Grief! I didn't mean to throw a Monkey Wrench into the works!
Let's see if we can't jump start this thing and get it turnin' over again....
"I have no intention of shooting myself for that Bohemian corporal."
Who said it, and on what occasion?

Re: WWII Forums Quiz Part VII
January 21 st 1943, at the surrender of 6 th Army at Stalingrad by Frederich Paulus one day after he was promoted to "Field Marshal" because Hitler expected him to shoot himself. (sorta an unwritten rule there...no Field Marshal vood allow .... or ever did allow ... himself to be captured alive)
Reinforcements (and a better/more real "Big-Picture" outlook) would have been better than a promotion/cake/party. Such are the thought patterns of a teched mind.
Surprise.

Re: WWII Forums Quiz Part VII
Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus. He stated this because of Hitler's expectation that he commit suicide rather than surrender his army at Stalingrad. Hitler had promated Paulus to Field Marshal because no German Feild Marshall had ever surrenderd his army and Hitler hoped he would continue the tradition.

Re: WWII Forums Quiz Part VII
How many Marine "tanks" (not LVTs/DUKWs) were lost on Okinawa !
156
Easier question:
Shermans (on Okinawa) usually had 97 rounds for the main gun, but crews would often over load their vehicles with another 60 on the floor. Dangerous, I know but so is running out of ammunition.
How many times did these tankers go through that much in a day ?
between blank & blank ?

Re: WWII Forums Quiz Part VII
between 3 & 4 times a day. Almost a machine gun there. Not a very impressive rate of fire, but the caliber makes up for it.
Easier question...
How many torpedo's did HMS Repulse evade before she was fatally hit and eventually rolled over to port ?

Re: WWII Forums Quiz Part VII
TIMELINE:
August 6, 1945 America drops the first atomic weapon on Hiroshima, Japan
August 8, 1945 America drops the second atomic weapon on Nagasaki, Japan - Russia declares war on Japan
Ever since I became aware of the above timeline (oh, I don't know, maybe 35-40 years ago), I assumed that Russia (Stalin), seeing that Japan was defeated and knowing that surrender was imminent, was just jumping in at the last minute to get some of the 'spoils' of war.
I just this morning discovered that I was wrong.
The Question:
What commitment had Stalin previously made that pre-determined this date of their entering the war against Japan?
-whatever
-Lou

In early '45, Roosevelt was looking ahead toward the invasion of Japan. He really wanted the Red Army to assist and tie down a substantial portion of the Japanese Army in mainland Asia.
At the Yalta conference (Feb-'45), Stalin, responding to pressure from Roosevelt, and in exchange for eventual concessions in eastern Asia, agreed to enter the war against Japan within 90 days of Germany's surrender.
Germany signed the armistice with the Western Allies on May 7, and with Russia on May 8.
August 8, 1945 was day #90.
Stalin was fulfilling his commitment.
EDIT: As a side note, it was about the ONLY commeitment he made at Yalta that he DID fulfill!
================================================== ===
OK - new question:
What was the 'Mosquito Fleet"?
-whatever
-Lou
