Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
Interesting camoflauge scheme. I would speculate it is USS Oakland.

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
That is not the USS The Sullivans. The ship in the photograph is definitely an Atlanta class light antiaircraft cruiser. It is an early war photo as the camoflauge pattern is non-standard consisting of the wavy hull deception pattern with sploches on the superstructure.
Note the three 5"/38 turrets superimposed forward. Note the small breakwater on the bow and the chine in the hull below it. There are also three 5"/38 gun turrets superimposed aft.
The The Sullivans was a Fletcher class destroyer not an Atlanta class cruiser.
That makes it one of four ships:
Atlanta but, we know she was always in sploches overall
Juneau
San Diego
San Juan
It cannot be one of the later four repeats built as the camoflauge is not a standard measure.
I suspect it is the San Juan.

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
I think he was referring to the ship the Sullivans were on when the were lost, the USS Juneau.

Show a new ship then, Tom, as you were correct with the HMAS Australia.

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
the blind hog/acorn analogy comes to mind. Actually, it looked like there was a number 11 on the bow.
Here's an easy one.

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
USS J. William Ditter DM 31. Note the mine rails down each side of the deck. Hit by Kamikazes amidships off Kerama Rito during the Okinawa campaign.
