Prince of Wales shortly before being sunk at Singapore. Note the well weathered and intricate camoflauge applied.

Terry asks that I post this picture for him.
We all know (speak for yourself, Terry) this is a "Flower" class corvette. What makes this particular one unusual? For a bonus name the ship.

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
Doesn't look WW 2 to me. Appears to be one of the SMS Derfflinger class battlecruisers of WW 1. Could be any of the three Derfflinger, Lützow, or Hindenburg but I can't tell which from the photo (size+blind = who knows).

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
That is one confused-looking ship. Obviously American with the cage mast, but it also has a tripod mast at the stern. It almost looks like a battleship built on a destroyer budget, what with the destroyer armament and battleship look......

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
Those are not the original turrets on this US ship. Although it never saw cambat, it is thought that it fired it's original guns more than any other US ship of it's type.

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
Wow Jeff, I'm not sure. It is a confused looking ship as Tom pointed out. The hull looks to me like It could be the Wyoming class battleship. Though the pic I just looked at had a different mast than your pick the USS Wyoming did convert her 12" guns to 5"/38's late in 44 and was also used as a gunnery training ship which fits your descriptions so that is my guess.
USS Wyoming after conversion to AG-17

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
USS Wyoming is correct.
The picture I posted does show her after her forward 12" turrets were removed and replaced by the 5" mounts. Her cage mast had not yet been removed.
Her after 12" turrets were removed in the 1920s to comply with treaty obligations along with her torpedo bulges and she became a training ship. Thus it is assumed that she fired her remaining forward guns more than any other US battleship.
Good Call.
Give us a good one to ruminate over.

That be the USS California, BB 44. Resurrected from the mud of Pearl Harbor to pay her respects to the Japanese troops on Guam and Okinawa.
