YouTube - The Sinking of HMS Barham
One of the most striking images of the entire war.

Thanks again VP
Great song by Nightwish on the Jutland video as well. Might just have to try one of their CDs out. "Sleeping Sun", never heard it before.

Oops, didn't realize it was my turn. Please forgive.
This photo ought to be enough to positively ID this warship.

Your turn on Part VII as well.
Come on folks, 1 of 4...
Alabama, Massachusetts, South Dakota, or Indiana.

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
It is one of these 4, but by looking at the 5" DP gun mounts closely, you should be able to tell which one specifically.

Can't see the DP mounts that clearly.

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
Jeff,
That looks like the old South Dakota. If she is, I've heard her shells going over head like a freight train.

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
It is South Dakota. The immediate give away is that there are only four 5"/38 turrets per side due to the inclusion of a flag suite on the ship. The second is the gallery of 20mm on #2 turret. Normally, that position had a quad 40mm on it. The photo is an early 1942 one of the ship as she does not yet have the full late war festooning of 40mm and 20mm AA guns.

Re: Name This Naval Vessel 2
Mr. Jack is correct first, it is the South Dakota. As Terry stated, the 4 twin 5" gun mounts on either side of the superstructure is the giveaway, the remaining 3 ships of the class had 5 mounts. The difference is that the South Dakota was built to function as a flagship and and extra space was needed for the extra living spaces and and admnistrative spaces needed for the fleet admiral, necessitating the removal of one mount per side, as Terry alluded to.
Mr Jack, it is your turn. If you can't post a pic, let us know and Terry can take it.
