The lady has just signed her name to a new B-24, which I blanked along with the serial number. Otherwise, google is too powerful.

Aside from her silent films, she is best known for a post-war Hollywood film about Hollywood. She was nominated for Best Actress for the role, but didn't win.

Could it be Gloria Swanson? I know she was in Sunset Boulevard, and that seems to fill one of the clues, but I thought it won some Oscars (maybe not for her?), and she was in one of those goofy Airport flicks wasn't she? I forget which one.

Yep, Gloria it is. Airport 1975 is the one she was in.

The photo was taken 4 October 1943 at the Ford Willow Run plant. The aircraft is 42-52117. It was delivered to Bruning, Nebraska on 27 October where the 449th Bomb Group was preparing for overseas movement, and assigned to the George Fergus crew who named her Two Ton Tessie from Nashville, Tenn. On 29 May 44, Two Ton Tessie was shot down by fighters near Weiner-Neustadt, Austria with all 10 crew members becoming POWs. The Fergus crew had 43 mission credits at the time they were shot down. Below is unaltered photo and a photo of the Fergus crew in front of the same a/c, just before flying her overseas.

Jeff, your google-proof pic will have to wait a bit, Mr. C is up.

Well, I thought it might be Gloria from the clues, but I sure wouldn't have guessed her from the photo. I guess I just never saw her in profile often enough to make the connection.

This one is going to be far too easy, but it is the only "odd" one I have in my photo collection which might be at least fun.

Bingo, I knew that would be toooooo easy, but it was the only wierd thing I had just laying around to put up. It was the V-3 by numerical designation or code name "Hochdruckpumpe" (high pressure pump), or even the "millipede" in the slang reference to the weapon.

Yer turn Jeff!

The soldier on the right is a Capt Daniels. Who is the soldier on the left?

Wallace Wade is correct. He coached the University of Alabama to several Rose Bowl wins in the 1920s and 30s, before leaving to go to Duke University, where the stadium there bears his name. Several of the national championships claimed by Alabama were when he was the coach.

My next clues were going to be: He has more Rose Bowl victories of any coach outside the PAC 10 and Big 10(11) and he is a member of the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame.

How did you find him?

Here is his statue at the University of Alabama.

I'd been looking for coaches who fit your previous clues. I actually started with Alabama (for some strange reason), but hadn't looked far enough pre-war to get to Wade. By the time you put out your stadium clue, I could eliminate the SEC stadiums, so that pretty much left the ACC. The Wade-'Bama tie jumped out, so I looked and found that he was born in Tn., attended Brown and volunteered for WWII service. I'd have been a long time getting to the Dookies without the stadium clue.

No, the plane is a single-seat aircraft. Note the US flag appears to be hastily hand-painted.

Here is another view of the aircraft. There were two persons aboard - the aircraft was not stolen.

There was a specific purpose for this episode, which is what I'm looking for.

Major clues:

1944.
The pilot was an Axis ace with 56 victories (depending on what source you read).
The "passenger" was shot down about 10 days prior and - in theory - could have been shot at by the pilot.

The flight originally took off in a Savoia-Marchetti JRS-79B1, but it developed engine problems and returned. Under time pressure, the Bf-109 was the only remaining option. The result was approximately 1300 happy souls.
