Initially, the USAAC expressed no interest, but during subsequent discussions with McDonnell some revisions were made and on May 5, 1941 a formal proposal was submitted to the Army. The project was given the company designation of Model S-23-A and called for a single-seat long-range fighter with a pressurized cabin. An unusually heavy armament of six 0.50-inch machine guns and four 20-mm cannon was proposed.

Too bad it went through such "hell" getting proper engines and such.

Re: Picture Quiz
Tojo, convicted war criminal who attempted suicide with a pistol, failed in the attempt, was saved by US blood transfusion, stood trial, and took the step through the trap door after the Far East Tokyo War Crimes Trial.

Re: Picture Quiz
Hideki Tojo is correct. I can't compete!
Hideki Tojo , 1884-1948, Japanese general and statesman. He became prime minister after he forced Konoye's resignation in Oct., 1941. His accession marked the final triumph of the military faction which advocated war with the United States and Great Britain. As the most powerful leader in the government during World War II, he approved the attack on Pearl Harbor and pushed the Japanese offensive in China, SE Asia, and the Pacific. His military coordination with Nazi Germany was weakened by mutual mistrust and divergent Russian policies. At home, the Japanese government asserted totalitarian control. Tojo resigned in July, 1944, after the loss of Saipan in the Marianas. In Apr., 1945, he recommended that the war be fought to a finish. He attempted suicide in Sept., 1945, but he was arrested by the Allies as a war criminal, tried, convicted, and executed.
I follow your lead..

That one was pretty obscure, so I'll post the answer and pass my turn on.
It is a Soviet GAZ-67B, an in house produced 4x4, 4-seater, from 1943.

Atta boy Jon!
Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov signs the Nazi-Soviet Non-aggression Pact while German Foreign Minister Von Ribbentrop and Soviet leader Stalin look on under a portrait of Lenin, August 23, 1939. News of the Pact stunned the world and paved the way for the beginning of World War Two with Hitler assured the Germans would not have to fight a war on two fronts.

Re: Picture Quiz
Correct! I thought it was easier than it looked because given a random destroyed Panther tank it would be near to impossible to determine where it was. But, if you searched "destroyed panther tank" on google images, it is on the first page.
But anyway, good job, your go!

Re: Picture Quiz
Defence of Stalingrad!
In the summer of 1942 German General Paulus advanced toward Stalingrad with 250,000 men, 500 tanks, 7,000 guns and mortars, and 25,000 horses.
Progress was slow because fuel was rationed and Army Group A were given priority.
At the end of July 1942, a lack of fuel brought Paulus to a halt at Kalach. It was not until 7th August that he had received the supplies needed to continue with his advance.
Over the next few weeks his troops killed or captured 50,000 Soviet troops but on 18th August, Paulus, now only thirty-five miles from Stalingrad, ran out of fuel again.
I must agree.... We had a thread a while back pertaining to pics that capture the war.... this is definitely one of them. Good one
