hints

He was awarded the Medal of Honor, but not for action in the Second World War.

He was on board a ship at a Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941.

He participated in the Battles of Coral Sea, Midway & Eastern Solomons before being transferred to shore command.

Well, that would be Vice Adm. Frank 'Jack' Fletcher, operational commander at both the battle of Coral Sea and the battle of Midway - two critical turning points in the war in the Pacific. He went on to numerous other Pacifi operations and wound up serving in the postwar occupation of northern Japan.

I always marvel at how deceptive the pictures of the fighting generals and admirals can be - he looks like a granddad, not a fighting admiral.

EDIT: "...he looks like a granddad, not a fighting admiral." Yeah, yeah, I know... it's possible to be both.... but you get my drift.

Now THIS guy looks like a Fighting General ! (which he was) Instead of a gentle granddad, he looks like a
drunk uncle with a bad attitude!

Five Navy Crosses while earning only one Purple Heart. most are killed earning their first.

A hint please -- I'm moused out from googling. However, I've learned a lot about American 4 star generals and admirals!

I keep vacilating between South Pacific (pith helmet) and then North Africa/Sicily/Italy for the theatres of operation to narrow down the choices. Operation Torch etc seems possible because of the light quality, the light weight material of the clothing, the clay tiles on the roof, and the deciduous bark trees in the background.

It's going to hard to give many hints without giving it away. He's in the Pacific, that's Chester Nimitiz in the center and a Marine general to the right that I'm not going to name just yet.

His early success was not aniticpated because he was a cruiser division commander who would not have the experience to handle carriers.

The person asking the current question has to acknowledge a correct answer before a new one can be asked by the person getting the question correct.

The man on the left looks like Adm. Raymond Spruance, co-commander of the Pacific Fleet with Halsey.

I'll come up with something shortly.

Regarding the man on the right (and without revealing his identity), would it help to know whether he is marine or army? Are those three stars on his collar?
