Re: Name that general! (with written questions too)
I did not think this was a hard one. Hint:
Maj Gen F.W. von Mellenthin was his Chief of Staff when this General was a Korps Commander in the East and followed him to the West, where they were in charge of an army group, until they were both sacked by Hitler.

Re: Name that general! (with written questions too)
Yes. What gave it away? I thought he was a well known General.
Quote:

Balck was a prime example of a class of German officers who rose rapidly through the ranks during the war, together with e.g. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, Erhard Raus, Generaloberst Josef Harpe, and Field Marshal Ernst Busch. Balck started the war as an Oberstleutnant (lieutenant-colonel) in 1939 and ended it as a General der Panzertrupper (general of armored troops = U.S. or British lieutenant general). Balck is often described as a very gifted commander of armoured troops, and his handling of 11. Panzerdivision and 48. Panzerkorps during 1942-3 would support this view. Critics claim that his rather less gifted performance at Tarnopol in March/April 1944, and during the defensive battles in the west in autumn 1944 indicates the risk that such a rapid promotion policy might cause one to rise above one's level of competence.
|
Quote:
|
Many of the battles Balck participated in are described in Generalmajor Friedrich von Mellenthin's Panzer Battles. Critics charge, however, that this work is not reliable as a historical study, and in particular battles in which the German side did not do well are not adequately described, while any assessment of Soviet forces in the book is highly questionable. Balck's own autobiography is entitled Ordnung im Chaos.
|
Personally from what I have read from various sources, I think he was a pretty good general. He adapted to commanding panzer troops pretty good and was a strong advocate of solid cooperation and coordination.

Re: Name that general! (with written questions too)
That would be French general Henri Giraud - who became co-president of the Free French with Chuck from January '43 until that November, when he was politicly 'outmaneuvered' and lost the co-presidency to Chuck....

Re: Name that general! (with written questions too)
Wow - I just checked Clarence R. Huebner's Wiki listing -
he was at Omaha beach, he looks like my guy AND he was at the Huertgen Forest!!
OK - my guy was in the chain of command that approved the execution of Pvt. Slovik. (It ultimately went all the up to Ike.)
I'll try and find another picture, too.
Nice try, though, Jeff.

Re: Name that general! (with written questions too)
You got it, Michelle! Good job!
He was also very vocal, during the planning for D-Day, about being AGAINST a daylight landing - he felt it should have been a night landing.
OK, go for it, Michelle.
