Could be either, and both may be fighting each other since the plans were sold to China and then to Iran.

Exactamundo. Off to you Tom.

There's some real speculation in the intelligence community (and the military aviation community on the whole) about how the Chinese got the plans for the J-10. I don't know whether Iran will ever build an indigenous variant, especially since they'll likely be able to purchase a MiG-35 that is more capable for less up front cost.

Hello Lippert,

IMO there is no reason to speculate about the J-10. The J-10 was defined and projected in the late 70’s – a print from June 1979 even shows a Young Pioneer holding a model.

J-10 in 1979.jpg

That China and Russia cooperated in the development of this aircraft is understood – such as the US and Europe or Germany cooperates in the development of various weapon systems.
That Israel exported technology (more or less to anyone on this planet) is known, but to say the J-10 derives from the Lavi is overdoing it by far. Israel is known for its avionic/radar and missile technology – and that technology was forwarded to China. The other main issue were the engines – this is were Israel was to be the broker between an indigenous Chinese build jet and US and European jet technology – due to the Tiananmen incident and the follow-up embargo, China was forced to switch back from the “indigenous” WS-10A and get hold of the presently used AL-31 turbofan.

Iran might go for the J-10 since Pakistan already has purchased the system.

Regards
Kruska

Mig 19 ---F 6/8 ? Same thing only different ? The list goes on (we all know)
Secrets don't stay secrets for long (except from the public)(which are then declassified 50+ years later)
Invention is made to be sold ? PC (shared) ?
A 12 gage shotgun is just that. Whether it has a longer barrel, smooth bore, adjustable choke, slug barrel, ability to fire 2-3/4, 3, or 3-1/4, pump, auto, single, or side by side is splitting hairs ? It's still a 12 gage shotgun. ?
Because you put a scope on it, doesn't change what it is.
