Ahhh, hold on -
According to Antony Beevor, his name was Major General Heinrich Kreipe, who had recently taken over 22nd Bremen-Sebastopol Divn from Major-General Muller. SOE really wanted Muller, getting Kreipe almost by accident . . .

You got it, Martin. I actually think Muller was the military commander of the island and Kreipe 'only' divisional commander...
It was an amazing feat. Moss wrote about this escapade in his book ILL MET BY MOONLIGHT...
Over to you...

OK, it's Euro-trivia time !
My favourite WWII painting is Frank Wootton's 'Rocket Firing Typhoons at the Falaise Gap, Normandy, 1944'.
Which village is depicted in the painting ?
If you can't run along to the IWM to see the original, take a look at : -

( This is an educational quiz ! )

Saint Lambert-sur-Dives
I am not allowed to post the whole story here, but an LAH veteran wrote:
'Dann kam der Absetzbefehl in der Richtung Le Sap-Monnai. Es konnte kein zusammenhängendes absetzen sein, denn St. Lambert und die Ruckzugstraße war eine Straße des Todes.'

Absolutely correct, Timo. Pity, I'd love to hear that story !
By the way, from the painting, the distinctive church tower is still there, the curve in the road is still there, and if you look carefully, pieces of the German column can be found in the hedges.
So - over to you . . . . .

Okay, here goes:
Some of you know that my research is focused on the career of SS-Sturmbannführer Knittel and his unit. He was commander of SS-Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 1 LSSAH and was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 04.06.1944.
But for what action/achievement was he awarded this medal?
Please give me:
- timeframe or date
- location
- involved wehrmacht unit
