Thanks Timo. I used the article written by you and Mr. Murhpy.
Here is my question. It is an easy one but interesting one. There were 5 documented Americans having served in the Waffen SS. There was one who defected by stealing an american plane and presenting it to the Germans. Please provide the following.
Name and rank of the individual:
Unit he was assigned to:
Commander of that Unit:
Good luck

I don't usually try these Waffen-SS ones as I'm not an expert but was it ; -
2nd Lieutenant Martin James Monti, who absconded in a F/4 ( maybe F/5 ) photo-recon version of the P38 in October 1944, flying from Naples to Milan where he defected.
Allocated to the SS-Standarte Kurt Eggers he was given the rank of SS-Untersturmfuhrer. The Commander was Gunther D'Alquen. I think !

This is by far the longest thread I have ever seen here so far! I have been following along the whole time, I though I was onto something when I started this quiz thread up.

Thats not a bad idea. Won't this thread soon be reaching its limits. Maybe a section for quizzes were we could have several sections. Otto, wot you think.

Although I REALLY like the quiz.

Martin Bull is the man. Second Lieutenant Martin James Monti (born 1910 in St Louis of an Italian-Swiss father and German mother) went awol Oct 1944, travelled from Karachi to Naples (through Cairo and Tripoli) where to stole a F-4 or F-5 photographic reconnaissance aircraft (photo recon version of the P-38) and flew to Milan. There he surrendered, or rather defected, to the Germans and worked as a propaganda broadcaster (as Martin Wiethaupt) before entering the Waffen-SS as a SS-Untersturmführer in SS-Standarte Kurt Eggers. At the end of the war he went south to Italy where surrendered to US forces (still wearing his SS uniform) claiming that he had been given the uniform by partisans. He was charged with desertion and sentenced to 15 years hard labour. This sentence was soon commuted and Monti rejoined the US Air Corps, but in 1948 he was discharged and picked up by the FBI. He was now charged with treason and sentenced to 25 years the following year. He was paroled in 1960.

Let's have a good old British ( two part ) question.
Fusilier Francis Arthur Jefferson of 2nd Bn. Lancashire Fusiliers was awarded the VC for his actions at Monte Cassino on 16/5/44.
a) What was the award for ?
( That's the easy bit )
b) According to 'Barrack-room talk' what SHOULD he have got the VC for ?
( That's the tricky bit ! )

You're killing me. Got the first part. He took a PIAT and knocked out one tank and forced another to withdraw during fighting at Monte Cassino. For the life of me I cannot find the answer to the second part. It is time to take the trusty spade and do some digging.

IMHO if one shot one's private parts with a PIAT there wouldn't be much left to pin a medal on . . . .
PS I can sense you're all struggling with this one !

I would venture to say that instead of lying down and have the PIAT 'anchored' on the ground, he just shot it off the hip...But maybe this is too simple??

I did not want to jump infront of Sevin, as he asked. But now he has answered, i'll have a guess to. Sounds ridiculas, but did he throw the projectile by hand. The Barrack room joke would have been along the lines of he should have got it for playing darts.
