Carl, I think you deserve it due to sheer persistence ! And it's too hot here to keep checking.....
The answer I was looking for was :-
September 19th, 1939. An SS private named Ernst ( a member of an SS Artillery Regiment attached to Panzerdivision Kempf ) and a Wehrmacht Feldgendarme herded 50 Jews of a work detail into a synagogue and shot them all. Despite Ernst being court-martialled and sentenced to three years' imprisonment, a senior military judge in Berlin overturned the verdict on appeal, saying that:-
'As an SS man he was particularly sensitive to the sight of Jews and the hostile attitude of Jewry; and thus acted...in a spirit of youthful enthusiasm' ( ! )
My source for this is 'The Waffen-SS 1939-1945' by George H. Stein (OUP 1966 ).
Come on, Carl - over to you.....

First give the date of the Battle of The Points (i give you one day either way).
Next, name the Japanese unit that was the intitial wave in the attack,
Tell me where it was supposed to land (so its obviously an amphibious operation).
Tell me why they didnt all land where they were supposed to.
And Finally tell me where they ended up landing.
That should keep you occupied.

HI CVM: I think this is what your are looking for, I hope. Date Jan 22 1942, Planned landing site was Quinauan Pt. The two Japanese battalions became separated and one landed Longoskawayan Pt. The Japanese units were part of the 20th Inf and both units were destroyed.

Hi CVM: The Service Command Area around Caibobo Pt. was the intended landing site, I believe.

Thanks CVM, the Pacific is my area of study.
OK: After the Allies called a halt to their attempts to breakout of the beachhead at Anzio, it appeared to German intelligence that the allies were preparing for a second amphibious invasion of Italy. Give me the Commanding German General, why they thought there would be a second invasion, the second invasion site and the German division sent to deal with it. Its a big question but you guys are on top of things so have at it.

Hi, I USED to know much about the Italian Campaign but....the Eastern Front is much more to my liking for the moment. I seem to recall something about a second invasion planned or thought to have been planned, and I think they were thinking of a place nearer Rome or just on the otherside of the Gustav Line. I have no clue who the German General was who thought the same-possibly Kurt Student? or someother Fallschirmjager General? Possibly Ramcke?????

OK: I will give you part of the answer. The second invasion site was thought to be Civitavecchia.

Sorry Steve, this one's got me beat.
I have checked every source that I have : Kesselring's, von Senger's and Clark's memoirs,'Tug Of war','Circles Of Hell', 'Rome Fell Today',etc etc.
And I can't find the answer !!
Clark suggested this operation to Alexander, who rejected it out of hand. However, plans were put in hand to give the appearance that a further invasion would happen, with the 36th Dvn being sent back to Naples for high-profile amphibious training. Allied aircraft flew observation flights over the Civitavecchia beaches.
However, I cannot find out which division Kesselring sent there......

Hi Martin: I am going to give you this one. Kesselring sent 14th Army troops to keep an eye out for the a landing that would never take place. My source is "The Rock of Anzio" by Flint Whitlock, which by the way is an excellent book. Your turn.

Thanks, Steve - must be just about the only book about Anzio I haven't got !
NEXT QUESTION : ( Not too obscure - we're getting complaints ! )
Which tormented Allied fighter 'ace' was credited with shooting down 27 enemy aircraft in 14 days, and survived a Liberator crash only to die in another plane crash in 1948 ?
