G'day Otto
Maybe there should be a referee??
Panzerknacker's question was not answered but there must be some miscommunication on his questions answer. Which question goes first??
Is Panzerknackers question still on??

Halt!!
Ok, I guess Popski is one of the few people that actually read the thread.
As far as I could tell, Panzerknacker had not yet declared a correct answer to his original destroyer question. The destroyer question is still open, and it has no answer.
Remember it is not enough to answer correctly. The member asking the question must "pass the torch" to you before you can ask your own question.
BTW, Popsky, I love that Avatar, out of the 250 it is one of my top 10 favourites!

Glad we could straighten that up back to my question:
This Man was posthumously awarded the medal of honor for his actions the first night after the landings at red beach at leyte in 1944.
Give his name, rank and reason he was awarded the medal, you can ask for more hints.

John F. Thorsen; PFC US Army 7th Division. He threw himself on a grenade to save 20 of his buddies.

According to the Medal of Honor records center, Thorsen's medal was awarded for combat on Letye at Red Beach. It doesnt mention day or night.

Are we talking about Asian-American Captain Francis B. Wai , 34th Infantry Regt, 24th Division ?
Landing on Red Beach, Leyte 0n 20/10/44 and finding a confused situation, he assumed command and led the way across rice paddies, exposing himself to Japanese fire to pinpoint enemy strongpoints to his men. In assaulting one final pillbox he was killed and was awarded a posthumous MOH.

Let's try again . . .
How about
Private Harold H Moon, Jnr ?
On the night of 21/10/44, he was in a forward foxhole armed with a submachine gun when the Japanese attacked. Moon spurred on the men in nearby positions, and when a Japanese officer tried to throw a grenade, Moon killed him. The Japanese moved a light machinegun to within 20yards - Moon called down mortar fire, destroying it. When more Japanese tried to shoot an aid man, Moon killed two of them. With his position surrounded by morning, a complete platoon rushed Moon, who calmly tore into them with his weapon, killing at least 18. Finally ,as he stood to throw a grenade, Moon was hit and killed instantly.
When fellow US troops reached Moon's position, it was surrounded by at least 200 dead Japanese.

That one gave me a headache...
Here's a really nice easy one to coast along with from the 'tough old gut' - Italy.
In October 1943, as the Germans retreated from Naples, a well-known soldier attached to the British 23rd Armoured Brigade was ordered to halt before clearing the City.
This was to allow General Mark Clark to effect a 'triumphant entry'. The well-known soldier's Jeep preceded Clark's half-track into the City as they were greeted enthusiastically by - no- one !
Who was the well-known soldier ?

OK, I'll give it away ! Amend the question to read
'...well-known soldier whose unit was attached to the British 23rd Armoured Brigade...'
See - easy!
