No and no.
Final, give-the-game-away clue; just because he was attached to 23rd Armoured doesn't necessarily mean he was British !

OK - two more hours and I'll give the answer and ask another question. I honestly thought that this one would go first time !

Well, shame on you all !
The attached unit was the US 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment commanded by that well-known soldier, Colonel ( later General ) James M. Gavin.
( Clue - Ryan O'Neal - geddit ? )
OK. Another easy one !
In late 1944, Ernest Hemingway narrowly avoided severe punishment from the Third Army, the charges being : -
'that he acted as a Colonel,French Resistance; that he had a room with mines, grenades and war maps; that he directed Resistance patrols, which actions are believed to violate credential rights of war correspondents'.
In which French town, outside Paris, were these offences supposed to have taken place in ?

Here goes,
All LAH accused in the Ardennes murder cases were tried at Dachau, the most notorious one being Joachim Peiper.
But a small group of men was tried by the Belgians a few years later. Now, one of them was an Obersturmführer from SS-Pz.AA1
But what was his name? And when and in which Belgian city was he tried? And above all, in which town did the murders he was accused of take place?

The City was Liege in mid-1948. The trial concerned the alleged shooting of civilians in Stavelot during the Ardennes Offensive. SS-Obersturmfuhrer Goltz was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
In addition, SS-Sturmann Kilat, part of SS-PzGr Rgt 2 battalion which had been assigned to KG Peiper, was sentenced to twelve years.
The atmosphere of this almost-forgotten trial was much more impartial than the 'Malmedy Trial' at Dachau.

Bravo Martin!
By the way, here are the other men from Goltz party who were tried there:
Rottf. Kasimier Leibersbach (Lodersleben Schloss 1924)
Schütze Ernst Mahl (Rossel 1925)
Schütze Franz Scziera (Bottrop 1926)
Schütze Alfred Schairer (Margrethausen 1926)
Schütze Heinz Tremmel (Kaiserslautern 1927)
Schütze Richard Rosenke (Leslau 1927)
This trial is one of the most frustrating parts of my research. I contacted the Laby and Kartheuser about this, both authors of books about this case. Laby says the original files were destroyed a while ago, Kartheuser gave me the address of his contact with the Belgian authorities (who gave him access to the files in the past) but this man replied to our letter that he did not have a clue which documents I was talking about
