The codename for the peenemunde raid was HYDRA....but I believe that was only used for this particular raid...

and it has got naught to do with a horse....

Question

That's right - the actual codename for that raid was indeed 'Hydra'. But Bomber Command had a name to warn stations to be ready before an operation was given an individual name....
Another clue - 'glorious' Sussex Downs ?

Phew ! He got it ! Thanks for being sporting, Popski !

Yes - Bomber Command HQ used the codeword 'Goodwood' to warn bomber stations that a 'maximum effort' was 'on' for that night.

All yours, Stevin....

I wouldn't know either without looking it up, but knowing you, I'm going to guess the unit is from the Netherlands, probably the Dutch SS volunteers.

He was actually caught twice. Once by the Germans and then by the Allies. Which are you asking? I will go for the latter. At the end of the war he was "captured" by his own men and handed over to the Americans. The unit was rewarded by being repatriated to Russia where the leadership was executed and the rest sent to the Gulags.

After his capture, Vlasov wanted to create an army that would help bring down Stalin and communism. The Germans did not listen until the end of the war when they agreed to build the Russian Liberation Army. Vlasov recruited soldiers from the POW camps. As expected, there were many volunteers but not out of love for the cause but out of survival due to the conditions of the camps. The army was unreliable and there were many desertions. At the end, Vlasov turned against the Germans and took Prague away from them. As the Russians got closer, Vlasov directed the Army West to avoid capture and inevitable death. Czech partisans stopped the unit and the Russians were allowed to proceed but only after being disarmed. In the end, the soldiers turned against Vlasov and turned him in to the Americans. They were hoping to stay in the west but were eventually repatriated. Vlasov was hung by the Soviets. Today, there is talk of "rehabiliating" his name due to his service in fighting the corrupt communist party. Even in the service of Germany, Vlasov never wore a German uniform. He wore the uniform of the Russian Liberation Army modeled after the Soviet uniform. Almost a sad enough story as that of Paulus.

Yes, PzJgr. I had read it too. Andrei Vlasov's story and his corps of "Free Russians". They were operating in the Pargue area and tried to get into the American lines, because everybody knew the fate expecting for them if they were captured by their countrymen... But the Americans didn't want to know a bit about Russians who had fought on the side of the Germans... They were finally captured by the Red Army and nearly all died, killed or inprisioned.

Beside, I think Vlasov was captured in May 1942 when the Red Army tried to encircle the German 6th Army at Khárkov, but it became a trap, because Von Paulus fought very well in the rear and Von Kleist smashed the Russian offensive's falnks. There were captured 90.000 Russians; a high ranking general among them: Andrei Vlasov.

Or am I stupid and he was captured some where else?

General Vlasov was the son of a Russian peasant from the Nizhni, Novgorod district who, although far from rich, had been classed by the Bolsheviks as "kulak" and treated accordingly. The young Vlasov finished school with the financial aid of his brother, and began to study first theology and later at the Agricultural College of the University at Nizhni Novgorod. In the spring of 1919 he was called into the Red Army. After a few weeks in a regiment, Vlasov was posted to an officers school and finished a four-month course, gaining a commission. As a second lieutenant he was sent to the front to fight against the "Whites."

He did not join the Communist Party until 1930, but from then on his career was swift, since he no doubt had great ability. In 1938, already a major-general, Vlasov acted as Soviet Military Advisor to Chiang Kai-Shek in China. In December 1939, he returned to Russia and was given command of a division. During the war with Germany he commanded in turn a tank corps and an army, taking part in the battle of Kiev and in the defense of Moscow. In March, 1942 he became Deputy Commander of the Volkhov Front. In mid-June of 1942, the Soviet forces operating on the Volkhov River were surrounded in the woods and marshes, without food and supplies, and by the end of the month surrendered to the Germans.
