G'day Martin

I looked it up in the Terry Gander book "Allied Infantry weapons of WW2". Te answer is also on the net I saw.
But as everyone else is on holiday I asume here's the answer.
The name's are ROVAL-2 and ROVAL-3
The #2 had a fuelcontainer resembeling a backpack andthe #3 had a cylindershape fuel container. Weighed about 22,7 kg and could flame about 8 seconds with a range of 36-45 meters.

Next question. What were the American flamethrowers called and what made these work better??

.....( sigh ) I don't know much about flamethrowers....

I can't find any name for the US flamethrower except M2A1 !

It had two gastanks plus a smaller tank of nitrogen for pressure. It could fire 'cold' ( unignited to 'soak' the target prior to ignition ) or 'hot' ( instantaneous ignition ). It had ten seconds'-worth of fire and could use either gas ( with range of 25 yds ) or napalm ( with a range of 55 yards ).
Because of the nitrogen-pressuring system, it would not explode if hit by bullets or shrapnel ( although sometimes the pressure-tank was filled with oxygen, in which case, if hit.....whoooomph ! )

A 'Private Ryan'-type question...

6th June, 1944, Omaha Beach, H minus 50 minutes: Duplex Drive Shermans were launched to support the 16th Infantry assault beaches.

How many were launched - and how many reached the shore ?

Martin

I think the supporting unit was the 741st Tank Battalion.

According to Ryan (Cornelius rather than Private) they started with 64 DD Shermans.

27 Sank,
32 were taken directly onto the beach by landing craft,
3 were in a landing craft whose ramp jammed,
2 struggled successfully ashore

That's good enough, Jumbo !

Right Tank Battalion - they actually launched thirty-two and the five you mention ( in total ) made it...

Your question.....!

OK

What was the name of Winston Churchills Bodyguard in 1940? In what formation did this shadowy figure serve?

Cool

I thought it was Inspector Walter H. ('Tommy') Thompson, late of Special Branch, Scotland Yard. 'Late' because he'd actually retired to become a greengrocer in 1936, but when war broke out Churchill wanted him back.

Correct Martin

The shady organisation was Special Branch who brought him out of retirement to serve Winston.

He used to do target priactice in the drive of Chequers with his Webley.

Your turn I believe?

He also accidentally shot himself whilst on duty ... (!)

Next question.
What was the last aircraft of the legendary ErprobungsGruppe 210 to be shot down over England in the Battle of Britain ?

Martin-you will probably laugh at this answer because i think i was reading a TOTALLY wrong chapter-but was it Leutanant Hans-Werner Lemke flying an Me-110????

Just say "NO" and try to make it relatively painless....

'NO!'

But thanks for trying, Panzerknacker.
I was sort of wondering : -
a) I've made it too difficult ?
b) Everyone's on vacation ?
c) It's Summer and no-one can be bothered with the Quiz ( or the Battle of Britain ) ?
d) Maybe I should post another Waffen-SS-On-The-Ostfront question to revitalize the Quiz ?

Clue : there is no correct answer to a,b,c or d above !

Yes Martin-my 2 cents-it is a rather hard question-because the combat records and exploits of Erpobunsgruppe 210 are practically non-existent. Maybe another question would be nice, and PS-its Winter over here so im cozy...

Sorry - I keep forgetting you blokes are upside down !

Right - listen up, everybody ! ( Voice echoes around empty room.....)
The last loss for 3/Erprobungsgruppe 210 during the BoB was :-
Oblt. Hintze in Bf109-E-4 (2024) shot down by 222 Sqn at 14:30 on Tuesday, October 29, 1940.

I'm just going to dig out my Waffen-SS books....

(Later )
Here it is .... On which date and during which campaign did the first recorded atrocity by a field unit of the Waffen-SS occur ?

The standard Luftwaffe pilots' tie which was, I think, black ( or very dark blue ??)
Hintze was actually a Knight's Cross recipient but the award came through after he'd been shot down....

Was this the crime committed by the Musikkorps of the LSSAH under SS-Sturmbannführer Hermann Müller-John? I know the story but I don't know the date of the name of the town.
