WWII Forums Quiz Part II
continued from here:
WWII Forums Quiz Part I
This is the continuation of the quiz thread. The rules are as before: To earn the right to pose a question, you must be the first to answer the current question correctly. You must however wait for confirmation that you are correct before you can ask your question.
I'm not sure who is up next, I think it is Martin.
Also, does anyone have any ideas about what the theme of the next thread should be? Cast your vote in this thread:
New quiz theme?

That's what I was asking, I wasn't sure if you had "won" or not.

Meantime, a little more about 'Ten Horsepower' : -
The total crew list on Mission 81 was : -
Lt. Dick Nelson ( pilot )
Flying Officer Ronald Bartley ( co-pilot )
Lt. Walter Truemper ( navigator )
Sgt. Archibald Mathies ( ball turret )
Sgt. Carl Moore ( upper turret )
Sgt. Tom Sowell ( waist gun )
Sgt. Russell Robinson ( waist gun )
Sgt. Joe Martin ( bomb aimer )
Sgt. Mac Hagbo ( tail gunner )
Sgt. Joe Rex ( radio )
The aircraft was damaged in a Me109 attack, not by flak. 20mm shells entered the cockpit through the windscreen , decapitating Bartley and seriously wounding Nelson in the face.
Carl Moore was first into the cockpit , having to overcome his revulsion at the terrible sight, and it was he who recovered the B17 from its' initial dive.
I still can't find who won which awards, but I'm working on it ......

Sorry for not responding sooner. My house was raided and I was taken for the seemingly necessary humiliantions by my friends that forego a marriage. I am happy to report that I turn out to be a natural at shooting clay pigeons! (8 out of 10!)
You're spot on Martin. I knew I could count on you! All ten point are for you!
It surely is an amaing story. I got the book about it right here (Valor at Polebrook). I wish I could write more about it but sadly I have to rum out of the door. I will write a review for Otto when I have finished with this book...
Over to Martin...

We have the same book !
And I've worked out the last part of the answer -
Medal of Honor : Truemper & Mathies
Distinguished Service Cross : Moore.
Silver Star : Rex
Purple Hearts : Truemper, Mathies, Rex, Sowell, Robinson, Bartley & Nelson.
Now I'll have to go away to think of a question.
PS : We'll have to discuss priorities , Stevin. I mean, this wedding thing is distracting you from vital issues such as the WWII forum quiz !

I Know, I know! I am disgusted and gutted by what they did to me. Damned if I go on a honeymoon! I don't want to miss these forums!

OK chaps, a Battle of Britain question !
Which famous pilot, flying what type of aircraft, was credited with 'shooting down the Heinkel III that bombed Buckingham Palace', being shot down himself in the process ?
( PS : It's actually yet another 'myth' )
Tally Ho !

Bang on, Panzerknacker.
Sergeant Pilot J H 'Ginger' Lacey it was, and a large piece of the Hurricane's engine sits on the floor of my study !
Actually, it's since been proved that he didn't get 'the Heinkel that bombed...' after all ( Buckingham Palace was actually bombed several hours before Lacey's combat ! ) but it was a great story for morale and the newspapers....
And over to you -

One off the top of my head...
How many DESTROYERS did the United States Navy lose in World War 2?

As always, I have no idea of the answer of whatever the question is...
But I thank Otto for posting this second part, I was thinking about it yesternight (I will bloody copy right my ideas!), because those nine pages were tedious...
Vielen Dank, Herr Generalfeldmarschall!
And you, guys, I could not answer any question but I keep an eye on this thread. Keep going that way and be mercyful with us, the ignorants...
Stevin, don't leave us!
No way... she must be better than all of us, bunch of WWII geeks... (I don't know what that word mean exactly, but I like it)...

Friedrich, Peppy, Thanks for the sentiments! I have bargained only a two day honeymoon on account of me having to deal with severe withdrawal symptoms in case I stay away from the forums for longer. I am already checking if our destination has any internet-cafes...

I usually don't like to break my own rules and 'hijack' a thread like this, but in this case we must.
Best of luck and congratulations Stevin!
Maybe in 15 years or so you will have a new member for us.
