I know who you are talking about but cant think of his name. He was a PFC, and was in the 82nd Airborne Division. I think he was in St. Mare Eglese (Sp?) In the movie: "The Longest Day" The Actor Red Buttons played this man.

Name the German General who jumped from his Panzer armed with a shotgun and fired it at the Russian soldiers causing the remnants to scatter, thus creating the link up with Wencks forces. This happened on May 1/ 1945.

Danke meine freund. Here it goes: Towards the end of the war there was a meeting between the lackey Keitel, Generaloberst Heinrici and a third general in the middle of nowhere at some crossroads. Keitel ordered Heinrici to give the order to hold to the last man. Heinrici's reply was that he would do no such thing. The third general also replied with a somewhat less then cordial remark. What was the answer and who made it?

Quite welcome. I know who your talking about since I just read about it. I just dont have my book on hand. I know what happened at the crossroads though.

Lakeitel, was screaming mad at Heinrich for not doing as so ordered so he relieved Heinrici of his command on the spot. I just cant think of the other Generals name for the moment. Ill have it later or tomorrow if nobody gets it by then.

Damned! I thought I had it, but the only I could find is the following:

The chief of Staff of the OKW, Generalfeldmarschall Wilhelm Keitel, was absolutely mad with his officers for the 'mediocre' performance of the III Panzerarmee of General der Panzertruppe Hasso von Manteuffel, so he called his two main officers; Von Manteuffel and Generaloberst Gotthard Heinrici for a meeting in a crossroad near Fürstenberg. Von Manteuffel's chiefs of Staff were fearing for the worst; to be executed for treason, so they kept four men with sub machine guns as precaution near the three generals.

Keitel immediately started yelling at Heinrici, acussing him of disobeying his direct orders: 'The Führer ordered you not to withdraw, not to move and you have pulled back!!!'
Heinrici, very quiet, as always explained Keitel that the III Panzerarmee, with its present men and resources available could not keep resisting on the Oder river. Unless he had some important reinforcements he could not do anything but keep retreating. He was not going to waste more lives in a useless deffence.
'There are no reserves left' shouted Keitel, hiting on his hand with his field marshall batton, 'You will keep your positions. You are going to take your Army and turn it around here and now!'

'As long as I am in charge here, I won't give that order to Manteuffel' Keitel was red of anger. He acussed Heinrici of cowardy, treason, etc. He said that the III Panzerarmee would have held if Heinrici would not have deserted and rejected his duties. That the Army would have held if Heinrici would have had the guts to shoot some men as example...
'If you want that those men -pointing with his fingers to the wounded and starving men marching down the road- to be shot, why don't you do it now?' Frustrated, Keitel got into his car and left. At night, Heinrici -after he had given the orders and reports for withdraw- was sacked of his command by Keitel on April 27th 1945.
