Oops - sorry, urqh ! Many years ago, when I worked in the City, I 'stumbled' across that enormous memorial quite by accident & then spent many lunchtimes pondering over the names of the ships with their lost crews.
And so to the next question ! Arnhem 1944 again and the life of a future British Chancellor of the Exchequer was saved in dramatic fashion.
Who was he and who saved him ?

Thats exactly how I discovered the tower monument..
Hackett saved him, and it was good old Heathcote Amory...spelling???
off topic, but Hackets 3rd world war books were pretty damn good too...
Seems some older politicians were up to it in those days,,,carrington at Nijmegan over the bridge in first tanks...Even an Archbishiop of Canterbury...a tank man I believe..
Old Harold Wilson and Ted Heath did war service too I think..

Revenge is sweet, eh, urqh ?? Great fun....
Yes, you're dead right - Lt-Col Derek Heathcote-Amory was saved from a blazing jeep by Hackett in person. Hackett must have been quite a character - abrasive and difficult at times, but no doubt about his personal courage and leadership qualities.
And, er... over to you again, urqh...

Waa going to ask question on which bridge was destroyed in front of Rangoon, but Martins too good at bridges..
Ok then, which American celebrity had a 5000 dollar reward placed on his head while serving in the USAAF in Europe.
Hearthrob though he was, and whistling around the English countryside on his motorbike, he was in fact supposedly heartbroken after his wife had died.
Many celebs put on uniform few like him actually join to fight and served his country with pride.

Definitely Clark Gable...I was interested on the reward part actually, as I did not remember that one..
Hermann Goering offered to reward any Luftwaffe pilot who downed his B-17. Such an honor, not confined to Gable, was less thought-provoking than talk that he was a favorite of Hitler's; or, stranger still, distantly related to Joseph Goebbels. "How can I hide with this face?" he exclaimed to Mahin. "If I ever fall into Hitler's hands the son of a bitch will put me in a cage like a big gorilla. He'd exhibit me all over Germany" "If the plane goes down," he concluded, "I'll just go with the son of a bitch."

Well I got past 5 minutes that time..
Yes Kai, and you even took my quote away from me...
He was shunned at first by his fellow airmen as they thought he was just promoting Hollywood at war type of thing, but he won his colleagues over by just getting on with the job..
Your go Kai..

It was the 'wife' bit that gave it away again... I didn't know about the 'bounty' but I knew about Carole Lombard....
Next ! Something different again. A dashing, handsome pre-war racing driver ( ironically, for BMW ! ) became a noted photo-reconnaissance pilot, finding the Tirpitz in Afjord on 23/1/42 only to be inexplicably killed later in the war when his Spitfire dived into the ground near RAF Benson.
Who was he ?

It's correct Martin
BTW what does the motto of the Royal Artillary in plain English mean. The "Ubique qua fas et gloria ducunt" thingy?
This is not the next question btw that is Martin's job.
Cheers Popski

Sorry, Popski - 'Ubique' is 'everywhere' and after that I'm lost....
Next question. In 1947, an American historian wrote a truly classic account of his experiences in the Bulge and the assault on Germany as a Captain in the US 23rd Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division. ( It's still in print today ).
Who was he and what is the book called ?
