The day is January 11, 1944; The 8th USAAF is conduction an Maxumum Effort mission at Luftwaffe factories at Braunschweig, Oschersleben and Halberstadt. 60 US bombers are shot down. Many more damaged.

One battle-damaged B17 struggles to maintain formation. Two engines are damaged. One of them is on fire. The pilot and co-pilot struggle at the controls. The crew is trowing everything detachable overboard to make the bomber lighter. Over the Zuiderzee the pilot says he can't keep the bomber in the air and orders the crew to bail out at landfall. All, except the pilot, bail out. Unfortunately most of the crew land in the water near Amsterdam and some drown.

Shortly after the men jump from the stricken plane, the fire in the engine dies out. The pilot is able to keep the B17 under control. He decides to try and fly the plane as far towards England as possible. In fact he manages to fly -and land- his bomber to England. Groundcrew are amazed to find only the pilot emerging from the plane...

Question; Who was the pilot and with which Bomb Group did he fly?

Thanks for trying, Volkbert! But no, Lt. Ohman died on July 30, 1943 when his plane crashed near Opijnen, the Netherlands after bombing the messerschmidt factory in Kassel.

He was shot down by Lt. Johannes Neumann of JG26.

Another hint; the book was written by the co-pilot Clayton David.

But Volbert, Ohman was the navigator, not the pilot.

Again, Martin was VERY close...

'Warley Fen's runways are still in position although they cannot be seen for growing crops....Only the Control Tower is in anything like its original condition, although if you ascend the iron staircase be careful.

You might end up writing a book about it.'

Which classic WWII book, by a best-selling author, is this the last line of ?
