Good try Panzerknacker but it's not correct. Mooyman was the first dutch winner of the RK. He did not earn the DKiG.

I will give some hints. The DKiG was awrded on 24 April 1944. His rank at that time was SS-Hauptscharführer. His first name was Frans.

Cool

SS-Hauptscharführer Frans Veneman (24 Apr 1944)

http://www.skalman.nu/third-reich/aw...rs-foreign.htm

The site as well mentions SS-Obersturmführer Gerrit-Jan Pulles (18 Dec 1944).

Do you know anything about the latter whether he received the German Cross in Gold?

Kai - Right answer, Frans Venemann.
And you are right about Pulles. He also received the DKiG. I was misleaded in my book regarding european volunteers in the waffen-ss. The book states that Veneman was the only unterführer who received the DKiG. I misread it for the only person who received the DKiG.

Your turn Kai.

Thanx Volkbert!

Ok. Remember that most of Tigers at Battle of the Bulge Dec 1944 were King Tigers. How many Tiger I´s took part in this operation?

Question

I'm not 100% sure about this one - very few Tiger 1s were involved in the Battle of the Bulge.

I believe that most were assigned to 6. Panzer-Armee and operated in the area of Bastogne. The units involved were schwere Panzer-Abteilung 506 and schwere Panzer-Abteilung (Fkl) 301. Both totalled 22 Tigers but I am not sure if these were all 1s, or included some 'King Tigers'....

A very good photo of a knocked-out Tiger 1 from 301 can be seen in Pallud's ' Battle Of The Bulge - Then & Now ' ( page 405.

38 ? But I still think some of those were Mk IIs...

As an amusing aside I can across a French web forum with a bitter argument going on, saying that there were definitely no Tiger 1s in the Ardennes. Obviously they haven't seen the photo I mentioned

Like I said Martin, the number of Tiger I´s was very low at Ardennes....

Next hint: think about the picture!

Groping around in the dark here - 301 had ten operational Tiger 1s during the Battle of the Bulge....

Eh, don´t know that source for the 10 tanks but my source claims that the number of Tiger 1´s was very very limited-I don´t want to give this for free- but the number can be counted from one hand´s fingers almost even after the hand has been hit by a panzerschreck....

So maybe the picture hint makes sense now?

This is doing my head in - I need CrazyD and his 'how many Tigers...' argument !

I now have, on 16th December 1944, sPzAbt(Fkl)301 reporting 27 Tigers on strength, with only 12 available for service, at : -

Fair enough, Martin!

I mean I believed in the book "SS weapons and Fighting tactics etc" by Dr S Hart&Dr R Hart, in which it says on p. 142

" This decline in availability ensured that the Germans deployed just one Tiger I tank during the Ardennes counteroffensive, and this vehicle was soon destroyed."

I searched this for more info in the net and it all seems to back the 10 operational Tigers...

Sorry for that but I trusted the book all the way...

Oh, and that is over to you, Martin!!

I must say, Kai, I looked at several sources for this and I rather think that maybe the exact figure will never be known for sure...

But I'm certain it was more than one tank !

Now I'll have to go away and think of a question....

OK, here's an esoteric Bomber Command question....

At the end of the 'Battle Of Berlin' in early 1944 gold watches were presented to the crew who had flown the most Berlin raids.

They were a gift from Senor Adalbert Fastlich of Panama, whose brother had been killed during the London 'Blitz'.

How many Berlin 'ops' had the fortunate crew flown ?

(NO Hi-Jacking intended here...)

I recently got a copy of Klages' Trail of the Tigers... I'll check tonight on what he says about Tiger Is in BoB.

However, as Martin knows, this number will be inaccurate.

(Actually, Klages would likely be one of the best sources for this- his Trail of the Tigers is simply incredible!! IF there is an accurate number for this, he will have it!)

I've been "around"... just WAY too busy to post until this past weekend (earning a paycheck has a whole new meaning...)

If I may... in answer to Kai's question- 8

(All from Ron Klages' "Trail of the Tigers")

s.Pz Abt. 301 (Fkl) was scheduled to participate in the Battle of the Bulge... but by 25th December 44 the 301st was relocated to the area around Norvenich and put in reserve. They would not be activated unti 16 January 45, when they were moved to the Ruhr area.

s. Pz Kp. "Hummel"... attached to s.Pz.Abt 506
Operated around Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. Tiger I inventory for s.Pz.Kp "Hummel"-

Dec. 44- 8 Starting Inventory, 8 Ending inventory
Jan. 45- 8 starting inventory, 3 combat losses, 5 ending inventory
Feb. 45- 5 starting inventory, 5 transferred out.

Klages' work focuses only on numbers and strengths- no action reports. All info provided there is that the unit was in action around Bastogne, then retreated on 17 Jan 45 to defensive positions near Brachtenbach, Germany.

So... I'm absolutley shocked to find this... but it seems sources disagree as to the exact number of Tigers participatng in the BoB.

(I hope you gents don't expect me to come up with the next question- I stink at trivia!!)
