France's last WWI veteran dies.
Lazare Ponticelli 110, was Italian born and served in the French Foreing Legion as well as a the Italian army. He immigrated to France in 1906. During one battle, he was WIA but kept firing at the Austians until they surrendered.
During WWII he joined the Resitance in 1942.
Legionaires will carry his coffin during a National ceremony that shlould be held on Monday and broadcasted Nationwide.
Lazare is also a national Hero in Italy.

Re: Last WWI vet of France dies
I wish he had written a book or given some interviews. It sounds like he had an interesting life.

Re: Last WWI vet of France dies
Actually he was avery modest person. He gave his consent for a national ceremony only last year and under the condition that it would be dedicated to all his comrades. I don't know if someone wrote his memories. There will be more information next Monday when I see the ceremony.

So few left and so much left unsaid.... a period of modern history is slipping away from us!

Re: Last WWI vet of France dies
Hi Skipper, and honored to do so. These Gents are the last of men from a fine era. Hopefully, our last WWI vet will be around at least several more years.
